Fortnight of Fright: I’m a Sleepy Hollow Fangirl!

Fortnight of Fright Banner

Welcome to our second annual FORTNIGHT OF FRIGHT event!
October 17th – October 31st, 2013

Last year, Alyssa (Books Take You Places) and I really bonded over our mutual love of Halloween and came up with the idea for A FORTNIGHT OF FRIGHT: a two-week long event celebrating everything Halloween and horror-related! We decided to bring it back again this year and we have a TON of fun Halloween things planned for you!

I am not a big fan of the scary side of Halloween, I must admit. I’ve been a chicken all of my life and now that I’m a big girl at 26, I’m not ashamed to admit it. Even as a two/three/four-year-old, I was ridiculously afraid of the aisle with the Halloween masks — like TERROR, would not go down the aisle, would not even LOOK at them while passing, tried to avoid that side of the store if I could. Why? I really have no idea, but I’ve always been a big ole scaredy cat. I’m not AS scared as I once was, but I’m still PETRIFIED of ghosts, haunted houses still make me want to freak out and panic, and I don’t do horror movies.

One thing I can handle — and LOVE — is FOX’s SLEEPY HOLLOW. It’s not only because of Ichabod Crane (played by Tom Mison), although… Have you seen him?

Okay, Tom Mison isn’t the reason we started watching the show, even though Alyssa, Amy and I are so in love with the way he says “BROADAXE” that we actually call the show “BROADAXE” now and our phones autocorrect and autocaps the word… (Seriously though.)

SLEEPY HOLLOW is such a fun show because there are so many elements to it. It does follow the traditional story line of the Headless Horseman terrorizing the town of Sleepy Hollow, but there is so, so much more than that. Time travel, witches, apocalypses of biblical proportions, demons, possessions, spirits — pretty much everything Halloween should be, which is why now is the perfect time to talk about it… And fangirl about it.

Sleepy Hollow isn’t just horror. There’s a lot of really interesting history tie-ins (three corner hats, anyone?) — For example (ahem), Crane was in George Washington’s army in the Revolutionary War. There’s mention of the Boston Tea Party and how it really came about. We get a glimpse of what happened to the lost colony or Roanoke. And people speaking MIDDLE ENGLISH, holla!

Along with THOSE fabulous elements, there’s also a lot of humor and witty moments! For one, I love that Ichabod Crane is a member of WASHINGTON’s army and that Abigail Mills’ commander is Frank IRVING. WASHINGTON IRVING! Ha! The show is full of other delightful cleverness and I’m so glad that they make it so enjoyable because for someone who’s easily spooked, the humor and other underlying story lines make it easy for me to enjoy the show and not be TOO creeped out by all the demons and whatnots!

So how close is it to Washington Irving’s original story? Well… Not very. We’ve got the main characters, the Headless Horsemen, and the town of Sleepy Hollow of course, but so many things set in a modern-day world that Crane has magically plopped down into. I really do enjoy the liberties that the show has taken though! Now instead of a skinny, knobby school teacher, Ichabod Crane is a handsome and clever solider from a distant time who mentioned he was a professor at Oxford. He’s already won the heart of Katrina and they were married — well, back in his time. Obviously there’s a lot more paranormal going on than just a headless horseman and there’s SO much more modern versus historical weaved into the plot. None of that bothers me one bit though! I’m already a diehard fan of Sleepy Hollow and if you haven’t watched it yet, start out with the pilot and let me know what you think!

Tell me, friends! Have you watched Sleepy Hollow yet? Are you as obsessed as we are?

I LOVE that show! My son and I watch it every week. I love the balance of humor, scary, history, action and chemistry. Great acting from everyone, great one-liners, subtle silliness… Really, there’s not a thing wrong with it. It’s all great. I’m sure it’s obvious, but I’m a total fangirl!

Oh YAY! Isn’t it just so wonderful!? It’s creepy and fun and smart and really is just so great 🙂

Hahaha the timing of this post is perfect because today my post is an installment in my “What if TV Characters Read YA?” feature, and guess who’s reading today? Yup, dear old Ichabod. I love this show. The actors, the tie-ins(Like Washington Irving!). I was SO excited for the Lost Colony of Roanoke because that’s always been one of my favorite American stories. And I have to admit, as much as I like the “broadaxe” part, I think my favorite is the way he says “levy”.

When Sleepy Hollow 1st started I was sure it would be canceled because I didn’t know how the show was going to go. But after watching it I knew it was going to be good. It’s like Supernatural and Grimm, which I love. The actor who play Ichabod is pretty hot. I love how he’s dealing with the modern world. Historical guy meets modern technology. They also gave him a eidetic/photographic memory, so now he’s like Sherlock Holmes too. And the show has a demons and other paranormal stuff. It’s totally awesome.
Also, the main girl’s name is Abby, which made me think of Abbey from Jessica Verday’s The Hallow series. If you haven’t read The Hollow trilogy, it’s also set in Sleepy Hollow. It’s YA paranormal/mystery.

This show is pretty much my new favorite! It’s so good and he’s so yummy looking and the creepiness is awesome! It kinda reminds me of Supernatural, but with historical stuff!

I love and adore this show. SO MUCH. I went into it thinking “this will be craptastic and I will love it because I love craptastic things”, but I legit enjoy it! And hello Tom. You’re face gives me feels.

No seriously though. This is just the best show. Give me a smart guy with a British accent who can pull off a tricorn and I just can’t be responsible for myself. Tom Mison is so great as Ichabod because he is not only pretty to look at, but he’s intelligent and sharp and, I think, adapting pretty well to modern life. Although I do love the way he often calls Abby “Miss Mills” all proper-like. SWOON.
I’m so very glad that you aren’t scare of Sleepy Hollow, B! If only we could actually watch it together. IN PERSON. That would be the cherry on top.

Omg, Ame. Someday!! That will be the best. We three can all watch BROADAXE together and it will be phenomenal!! 🙂
      I love the proper-like! Leftenant 😉

OMGOMGOMG What is there to say? Ahem…

BROADAXE <333 also LEVY <333 also MIDDLE ENGLISH. I cannot.

I love how this speaks to so many different people because there are things like demons, which please…some kinds of people…ehhh hemmm…and then the not so scary parts, and the HISTORY and LITERARY ALLUSIONS!! I just love every minute of it. I was a little worried when we saw the previews, but what they are doing just really WORKS. I can't wait to see what is going to happen next!!

Also, I love live watching with my boos <3

I’m very positive! I’ve only seen two episodes so far, but I really like it. The blend of history and modern age is fun, especially seeing Ichabod trying to adjust :p And yes, he’s not unpleasant to watch at. I love his accent!

  9. deshipley

Just jumping in real quick to agree with absolutely every positive thing about Crane. I don’t even know what to add. Clever and brave, true-hearted and idealistic, really darn adaptable and (it bears repeating) British, and a steadfast friend to the good Leftenant. He’s just an utterly adorable character, hence my utterly adoring him. I’m going to see if I can talk my brain into thinking of him as BROADAXE now, because that is a flippin’ boss nickname, beautifully earned. 🙂 So glad my own scaredy-cat tendencies haven’t frightened me away; I want in for the long haul!

Sleepy Hollow is AMAZING! Both me and my boyfriend are hooked on it and the actors are awesome. I love listening to Ichabod Crane talk! I also love when he encounters new modern things (like when he put down the gun after only one shot). This show is certainly something to fangirl over 🙂

  11. Lisa

Yay, Sleepy Hollow! And SWOON Ichabod Crane! I’m pretty much in love with this show, though I think something is going to develope (of the romantic variety) that I don’t want to develope. I haven’t seen the most recent episode yet so I can’t be sure. Anyway…. Yay, Sleepy Hollow! Haha. (I always accidentally write “Hallow”.)

  12. Nikki

I am seriously LOVING Sleepy Hollow!!! Ichabod is one of my current-favorite TV characters, and I love the creepy-but-not-horribly-creepy plots, too. The only thing I don’t like about it is Ichabod’s wife – don’t ask me why, she just annoys me a lot, lol. But all the other characters are fantastic, and it has been so solidly good every week… definitely one of my favorite new shows!!

  13. Pamela

I am embarrassed to say that I haven’t started watching this show. I keep hearing good things about it. I will need to catch up and start watching it.

  14. Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl

This show is about as scary as I can get, but I LOVE it. I cringe, and I squint, and I curl myself into a little ball… I do it for Ichabod. I love listening to him. He could read the phone book and I would swoon.

Anyway, also love all the historical elements and the amazingness of this show! DEFINITELY one of my favorites!

  15. Angie

I am actually sitting here right now catching up on the last 4 episodes. I love this show soooo much!!! I was so happy to hear it was renewed for the 2nd season already!

  16. Sandie @TeenLitRocks

Yes, he’s dreamy, and I love his chemistry with Nicole Beharie (the Lt.). I know he’s married to the witchy woman, but I can’t help but think they’ll eventually “go there.”

    1. Brittany Post author

I think the show’s leading it there too… But I kind of hope they don’t! I like the idea of them working together and being friends, maybe a little sexual tension, but I don’t want it to turn into a romance!

  17. Alexa Y.

I haven’t watched Sleepy Hollow yet! But based on your thoughts about it, I think I might enjoy it. The history, the people, the story all sound fantastic!
