Book Title Buzzwords | THORN

Book Title Buzzwords

I love noticing title trends in the YA world (and in adult books too!) and I can also tell that there are certain words I latch onto. Book Title Buzzwords features books that I’ve read (or want to read) that follow some recent trends!

The live action Beauty and the Beast movie is coming out SO SOON so let’s talk about some rose-inspired books on the thorny side! I recently finished THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS so the name is fresh in my head and I’ve noticed a few other books that have had the same thorny trend too!

EVERY ROSE HAS ITS THORN…

THE GIRL OF FIRE AND THORNS by Rae Carson | Book one in the Fire and Thorns trilogy Penguin| September 20, 2011

This book was so incredibly hyped for me — just from years and years of people reading it! It was fresh on the scene when I first started blogging and was a big fantasy series that I wasn’t quite ready for as a fantasy-newbie at the time.
I just picked this up on audio in an Audible sale a few weeks ago and loved the narrator (Jennifer Ikeda) but was surprised to find that I didn’t love the book. Maybe I’ve grown too used to hardened female warriors because Elisa seemed very soft and naive. I don’t need all female heroines to be badass from the start but I found it hard to get along with Elisa for an extended period of time. I think I ended up being the black sheep (yet again) on this one because it incorporated to many plot elements that I’m just not a fan of and it took a lot away for me.

ACOTAR cover

A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES by Sarah J. Maas | Book one in the Court of Thorns and Roses series | Bloomsbury | May 5, 2015

I absolutely adored ACOTAR when it came out! I was so impressed how Sarah J. Maas had written two fae fantasy worlds and they didn’t feel the same. Feyre and Celaena had similar traits and yet they felt like two very distinct characters. (Well, they did until their next books, for me anyway.) I have since fallen out of love with Sarah J. Maas’ books from the past couple reads but I really was surprised how much I loved this one when it first came out! I wasn’t even a fan of fae worlds and yet A COURT OF THORNS AND ROSES totally swept me away!

PRINCE OF THORNS by Mark Lawrence | Book one of The Broken Empire series | Penguin | August 2, 2011

Am I complaining about a third thorn-book? Apparently I am. (Sorry, guys. When I started this, I hadn’t realized how many I didn’t get along with.) PRINCE OF THORNS also comes highly-praised and yet it also comes with words of warning. I’m all for an anti-hero but Jorg was really something else in this book. It was like reading about Joffrey, except somehow we were supposed to root for him. Granted, I didn’t keep going with the book so things might have settled down a but and I could have grown to like some characters and situations but it was veyr brutal and very graphic to get into with the first few chapters! That’s not something that usually bothers me but a lot of it seemed like too much and didn’t really seem useful to the plot.

MORE THAN JUST THORNS…

THE THORN OF EMBERLAIN by Scott Lynch
Here’s one I know I won’t be disappointed in. This is book four in my beloved Gentleman Bastard series and I CANNOT WAITTTT. I have been very impatiently checking for updates since the date has been pushed back a few times.

PRINCESS OF THORNS by Stacey Jay
I have heard such good things about this book! I’ve been holding out for the audio (I think I heard the audio was good. Is it Julia Whelan?) but haven’t gotten around to it yet.

THE STEEP AND THORNY WAY by Cat Winters
I have lots of Cat Winters on my TBR and while this won’t be the first one I pick up, it’s still on there! I’ve heard so many good things about her books and this is no exception.

Girl of Fire and Thorns: I was on a ‘reading hiatus’ when this book came out so it wasn’t a hyped book for me at all. I read it in 2015 and it was… just okay. I enjoyed the other books in the series more.

I’m a huge SJM fangirl… Enough said! I’m glad you loved ACOTAR too but I’m sad that the next book and more of the series wasn’t good for you! 🙁

Prince of Thorns is on my TBR.

I haven’t read any of your yay thorns books yet but Princess of Thorns is on my TBR and the other two also look like I should check them out!
