Top Ten Tuesday – January 30, 2018: Ten Books I Can’t Believe I Read

TOP TEN TUESDAY
January 30th, 2018

It’s Top Ten Tuesday, formerly hosted by The Broke and the Bookish and now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl! This week’s topic was Ten Books I Can’t Believe I Read

Reading moments are full of all sorts of books and there are still some books I can’t believe I read, finished, or had on my TBR for any number of reasons. This was an interesting topic and kind of  hard to choose but I loved coming up with books for this theme and the reasons why!

OATHBRINGER by Brandon Sanderson

OATHBRINGER is the longest book I’ve ever reading, coming in at 1243 pages (55+ hours of audiobook). It actually didn’t feel super long since I was enjoying it but I’m kind of in shock a little bit that I read such a huge book!

A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC by V.E. Schwab

I’ve been super iffy about Victoria Schwab for a number of reasons that range from personal to writing styles to over-hype, but I did read A DARKER SHADE OF MAGIC and I actually really enjoyed it! I think it’s the strongest book in this series so I was kind of bummed that it lost steam rolling through the second and third books but I surprised myself with this one.

LOOKING FOR ALASKA by John Green

After stumbling through all of his other books, I pretty much said no to any more John Green books ever again. I don’t hate them but I really don’t enjoy them. I read LOOKING FOR ALASKA on a recommendation from some close friends and it probably meant more to them than it did to me, but again, not awful. I just didn’t connect the way most people do!

WIRES AND NERVE by Marissa Meyer

I knew I would read WIRES AND NERVE because it’s The Lunar Chronicles but it was my first graphic novel! I didn’t really have many intentions of reading a graphic novel before this but it was so much fun!

THE GOOSE GIRL by Shannon Hale

I can’t believe I read this book because well… I kind of didn’t. We read it as a group read and it’s one of Amy’s favorite books ever and I’m surprised she didn’t dump me because I really didn’t get along with it at all. I didn’t connect and ended up skimming a lot… Oops.

BURIAL RITES by Hannah Kent

burial rites

This was another group read that I’m actually glad I read but I would have NEVER read it on my own. I still didn’t love it but was proud that I actually read some historical fiction that wasn’t YA and didn’t have fantasty or paranormal elements in it haha! It’s totally not my thing but I actually was interested despite feeling detached.

AND THEN THERE WERE NONE by Agatha Christie

Why is this so unbelievable? Because I read it in Spanish… and not for school. I wanted to keep practicing my Spanish after college so I wanted to try something “easy” and apparently this was my choice! It was fun though!

WALDEN by Henry David Thoreau

I did read this one for school, English class in high school, and it was without a doubt the most boring thing I’ve ever read. Even more so than books I’ve gotten angry at — ask me what my most hated book is ever and I’ll tell you it was one of the two books I read by Thoreau. I’m still angry about how boring it was and it’s probably the only book I’ve ever given one star to. Even books I haven’t liked have still earned two.

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS by George R. R. Martin

Did I really read this whole series or was it all a dream? I can’t believe it’s already been like four years. I won’t bring up the wait for book six. Oops I just did.

NOBODY BUT US by Kristin Halbrook

If this hadn’t been a group read and it wasn’t so short, I would not have finished it. I’ve left a lot of stuff hanging and this should have been one of them… but alas, we finished it for the sake of our group read!

I am one of those people who connected with Looking for Alaska, but I have zero interest in any of his other books. They seem so different. I’m impressed you read And Then There Were None in Spanish!!

  2. Jessica @ a GREAT read

OOh nice picks! I admit, that the only graphic novels I’ve read were ones based off of books I’ve read! Lol! Not sure if that’s cheating or not! I did pick up a comic book series (that I am sooo behind in) that’s Scooby Doo related. But a much more darker version of Scooby Doo! It’s been fun so far! Really need to get back to it!

    Here’s my Tuesday Post

    Have a GREAT day!

The Song of Ice and Fire series totally feels like a fever dream because IT’S BEEN SO LONG. I love Burial Rites; I’m glad you went outside of your comfort zone and picked it up! Oh man, I never had to read Thoreau in school, but last year my choir performed Dominick Argento’s Walden Pond, which is a set of four songs set to text from Thoreau’s Walden. It was DEFINITELY dense (also probably the hardest piece I’ve ever studied– the combo of ridiculously hard rhythms, notes that didn’t make sense, and overly wordy text made for a challenge, ha).
