A Book and a Candle | Wonder Woman: Warbringer + Themyscira (Flickering Tales)

I was chatting with my dear friend Andi from Andi’s ABCs the other day, mulling over what kind of new blog post I could possibly come up with for my blog. After blogging for five years and feeling like I’m repeating so many things and having candles take over my life with Novelly Yours (in a good way), I just don’t have as much time or energy to create some of those fun graphics and infographics that I used to love to spend hours and even days creating! Book and a Beverage really kind of died out with so many people having already done it and me having a hard time keeping track of blog posts sometimes so she suggested I switch things up to fit my life with more of what I’m doing now… and do a little switch from books & beverages to books & candles! I already post quite a bit of books & candles on my Instagram account and it seemed like the perfect way to really tie everything back together!

Here on A Book and a Candle, I share two of my favorite things! I started my own candle shop about two years ago and ever since then, my candle addiction has only grown exponentially! I share a lot of my photos on Instagram but not many really make it to my blog so this seemed like a great opportunity to talk some more about books and candles and how one enhances the other!

Today I’m sharing a photo of my one and only piece of WONDER WOMAN merch along with my copy of the book! I actually have the hardcover sitting on my shelf but I was too lazy to take it down (I have so much merch sitting on top of book, it’s crazy) so I used my ARC instead! I recently purchased this candle from Flickering Tales and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to talk about it a little bit more!

THE BOOK: WONDER WOMAN: WARBRINGER | Goodreads | Review
THE CANDLE: Themyscira from Flickering Tales
Candle scents: ocean, sandalwood, citrus

It’s no secret that I’m a huge Leigh Bardugo fan so when I heard she was writing a Wonder Woman story, I was instantly excited and intrigued! I’m not a big super hero/comic person so the concept of DC origin stories was fun but not really in my wheelhouse, but nevertheless, I was excited for each one of them!

I finished WONDER WOMAN: WARBRINGER a month or two ago and really enjoyed it! Diana was actually my least favorite character of the book because she’s so… wholesome haha! I adore Leigh Bardugo’s sassy and/or morally gray characters so those were the ones I was more drawn to. But the story was fun and creative and so it was so interesting reading something that wasn’t the Grishaverse!

I actually didn’t plan on collecting any WONDER WOMAN merch because the Grishaverse is where my heart truly lies and if I planned on collecting all the WW books and candles and such, well, I would have to have a whole new bookcase just for Leigh Bardugo items (which realistically, I may need anyway)! I have so many items relating to Shadow and Bone and The Dregs that I didn’t want to add WW candles to it too (and ya know, I should listen to my bank account) but I was so happy to receive the Themyscira candle in Flickering Tales’ Leigh Barudgo locations box!

Flickering Tales has started releasing special edition boxes based on a theme, as many candle shops now do, and I couldn’t pass the opportunity to grab one based on Leigh Bardugo’s books and special locations within them. To be honest, I totally forgot about WW and didn’t think of it being included and I’m SUPER glad it was because the Themyscira candle is actually my favorite of the bunch! I don’t know what it is about it but it just makes my heart happy and reminds me of something comforting and that is truly the best kind of candle magic!

Rachael’s Themyscira candle smells like ocean, sandalwood, and citrus and the scent combination is a perfect balance! I can smell the calming notes of the ocean waves and the vibe of the candle is like being outdoors, standing on the shoreline. I’m not the biggest fan of sandalwood but I love it in this candle, adding a musky and earthy note to the overall profile without overwhelming the other scents as sandalwood can sometimes too. And the citrus blends beautifully with the other two scents, rolling into the overall affect of the rolling sea. These scents just really blended together beautifully and the final effect is simply wonderful!

This candle was a part of a special release box so unfortunately, it’s not on sale on its own but Flickering Tales has a few other candles that have ocean or sea notes that you might want to check out if this sounded interesting to you! She has candles inspired by DAUGHTER OF THE PIRATE KING, Shades of Magic, Stalking Jack the Ripper, and more!

A Book and a Candle | Harry Potter + House of the Wise (In the Wick of Time)

Today I’m sharing a photo of my newly purchased candle from In the Wick of Time! I had purchased two mini tins in a holiday sale from Kaylan’s shop last year and loved her fragrances so I finally broke down and bought some more after her most recent restock, and of course, I had to have her take on the Ravenclaw candle!

THE BOOK: HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE (20th anniversary edition) | Goodreads | Review
THE CANDLE: House of the Wise from In the Wick of Time | Buy it here
Candle scents: Earl Grey tea & books

The question more so nowadays is who ISN’T a Harry Potter fan more so than who is one. There’s no doubt my love for the series runs deep and I’ve recently become obsessed with buying all things Ravenclaw, specifically candles. It’s really fun to see the different takes and most shops happen to include tea and books as Ravenclaw scents (for obvious reasons) so it’s interesting to see how differently some of them turn out as well!

One thing I really like about In the Wick of Time is Kaylan’s detailed blends. Obviously I don’t know what goes into her candles but they really do smell like they have many different layers to them and I like being able to get that candle FEEL. House of the Wise does smell like books and tea, but the tea is a little more potent than some of the other Ravenclaw candles that I own (or even just candles advertising tea scents) and I like that it really stands out! I know tea fragrances can sometimes be really good blends and base notes and I feel like I can really smell it in this candle! There’s also a nice comforting woody, papery note for the essence of books that works pleasingly well with the tea! This really is one of my favorite Ravenclaw representations, especially since so many shops have a book and tea combination. It’s hard to get something different but I love this interpretation from In the Wick of Time!

And naturally, I don’t really have to talk about HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE as a book in itself, but I can’t resist showing off these anniversary editions! When I started seeing them around Instagram, I was sure they were bank-breakers but they were actually super cheap from Book Depository! The hardcover is around $15 and the paperback is under $9! I was only going to buy one but at those prices and free shipping from Book Depository, I bought them both and I’m SO happy that I did. They’re gorgeous in photos but they’re even more beautiful in person. I keep forgetting that there’s extra info for the selected House, depending on which one you buy, and I need to go back and read up more on my Ravenclaw gang!

A Book and a Candle | American Gods + Wednesday (Canterbury Road Co)

To kick off the feature, I’m sharing a photo from a couple weeks ago that I really enjoyed! I had never photographed my copy of AMERICAN GODS, although maybe once in a “haul” photo when I first received it as a gift, and especially with watching the show (although shhh I still need to finish), it seemed like a great time to feature the book! Add in the fact that I had just received my candles from Canterbury Road Co. which included a Wednesday candle and I knew my post was set!

THE BOOK: AMERICAN GODS by Neil Gaiman | Goodreads | Review
THE CANDLE: Wednesday from Canterbury Road Co
Candle scents: Thunder, lightning, mead, coins

I read AMERICAN GODS back in 2015 as an On the Same Page group read with my girls Amy & Alyssa. Admittedly, it started a little bit slow for me until I got the hang of the plot and all of the different gods involved but then I couldn’t put it down! Alyssa is the Queen of Gaiman and she introduced me to his writing so I think this was the third Neil Gaiman book I read. I had enjoyed his other books and knew I could get into this one but it was the first more adult read (after THE GRAVEYARD BOOK and STARDUST) so it had a very different feel. Not in a bad way, but in a way where I just had to readjust my brain a little bit! The story was incredibly unique and very fun and I loved the complex characters and connections from start to finish.

Wednesday, the inspiration for this candle, is a main character in the book (and what is also now a TV show on Starz). Related to his character, Wednesday is often drinking mead, has an affinity for coins, and for obvious reasons if you pick up on the whole Wednesday thing is related to thunder and lightning. Sometimes I’m wary of candles that include scents that don’t have a specific scent (like thunder, lightning, and maybe coins) because I don’t quite know what the candle is going to smell like but I know Shannon (the owner & creator at Canterbury Road Co) from blogging and I had all the faith in no matter what candle I would be getting! Naturally, the candle is amazing. It really does have a thunder, lightning, and coin feel,  believe it or not! The candle has a great overall blend of some soft ozone notes with a little bit of an outdoorsy feel that might make you feel like you’re feeling that crackle in the air during a lightning storm! There are some other notes that can be perceived as metallic to make that coin connection and a delicious fragrance of sweet and spicy mead to round it all off!

What I love about Shannon’s candles is that they’re such great blends. You can pick out the different notes that she’s included but they also make for a great overall fragrance for an all-encompassing experience. The Wednesday candle is actually no longer being sold BUT there are pleeeenty of other candles for you to choose from at Canterbury Road Co including candles inspired by Outlander, The Queen’s Thief, Maggie Stiefvater, and a great “Reading” line which is quickly becoming a Canterbury Road niche! (Reading in the Leaves, Reading Under the Stars, Reading in the Garden, etc).

I love the combination of this book and candle and how well this character is embodied! I really love the scent combinations at Canterbury Road Co so make sure to check out Shannon’s shop and peruse all those beautiful candles!
