The Selective Collective: One Year Anniversary!

SCnewbanner

The Selective Collective celebrates one year!

Oh, happy day! We at The Selective Collective are celebrating our one year anniversary! Yep. One year ago in October 2012, we transformed our original idea of “Casting Call” (which was essentially us dreamcasting our favorite books) into a full promotional feature called The Selective Collective!

It’s been a wonderful year reading and discussing books with these ladies and I am SO grateful they took me under their wing! Last year when they asked me to join the group, I was just a baby blogger still, only 6 months under my belt and they liked me and trusted me enough to invite me into their group and I cannot tell you how honored that made me feel!!! I’ve loved working with them and I think my favorite thing about any of our reads is our Round Table discussions because we get to know so much more about each other and how we felt about the book.

Of course, we also have CRAZY email conversations that frequently have nothing to do with reading too… Like how are days are going, crazy work situations, and celebrity crushes. They are such a wonderful group of ladies with such kind hearts! We even did a Selective Collective gift exchange for Christmas and we had an absolute blast picking out gifts for each other because it all meant so much!

For our anniversary celebration, we’re each writing a special post in honor of one year including what were our favorite books, special moments over this past year, and each blog is also hosting a small giveaway!

Let’s kick off this post by first telling you my favorite books read with The Selective Collective this year!

Sandie and I got to meet at BEA! The first member of The Selective Collective I got to meet in person!

I also got to meet Lauren Myracle (at BEA & Anderson’s) and Amanda Sun (at BEA) but didn’t get photos with/of them!

It’s been a phenomenal year and we look forward to what 2014 holds for us! Here’s a sneak peek at what we have coming up starting in November:

  • November: Loud Awake and Lost by Adele Griffin (Random House/Knopf Books for Young Readers)
  • December: The Promise of Amazing by Robin Constantine (Harper Teen/Balzer + Bray)
  • January: Being Sloane Jacobs by Lauren Morrill (Random House/Delacourte)

I’m so excited to work with them on many, many more books! Another big round of thanks to all of the authors that we’ve worked with! They are so amazing and so kind and I can’t tell you how much fun we’ve had reading their books and being able to do Q&A on their writing!
We also want to give a HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to all of the publishers, publicists, and marketing agents who have helped us make The Selective Collective such a huge success for us! We would not be able to do it without their support and generosity for all of the ARCs, finished copies, giveaways, and author partnerships!

The Bookcase Spectacular Giveaway!

GUYS. You may or may not have seen but I got new bookcases. And not just any bookcases — real deal, solid wood, BUILT-IN CUSTOM BOOKCASES. THEY TAKE UP THE WHOLE WALL. This alone deserves a celebration. I’ve had quite a few books that I’ve been meaning to giveaway so I thought this was the perfect occasion to do so!

Shane’s friend Ryan from RPM Custom Homes built the bookcase and he did such a FANTASTIC job!

FULL OF BOOKS!

FULL OF BOOKS!

Before we get to the giveaway, I’m going to show you guys these beautiful babies and show you how I organize my shelves… And believe me. It’s crazy.

AdultsideFirst up, we’ve got the “Adult Side”. My bookcase is made up of MOSTLY YA, but I still have mounds and mounds of cozy mystery mass market paperbacks that I stocked up on back when I was… you know, actually reading cozy mysteries. Some are series, some are only the first in the series, some are series I haven’t even started yet… Then we’ve got the In Death series by J.D. Robb which I think I’ve made it nine books in? And the ones I own are the ones I still need to read. (I sold the ones I did read back to the used bookstore.)
Then I have a shelf full of ALL my Janet Evanovich books since I’m a big Stephanie Plum fan! I’ve got the whole series in PB (ONLY in PB) and some of her other books too, which I have yet to read.
Then I have the super sad shelf full of the rest of my adult books… Some from BEA, some previously purchased but… There’s not much there haha! YA has truly taken over.
LeftSideYANext up, from left to right, is my YA collection! On the top is my FAVORITE series (actually, there are some adult books there on the top left… Heather Wells, The Spellman Files, and then the various other adult books I couldn’t fit on the left hand side) and then my YA favs on the top right!
The next shelf down are the YA sci-fi/paranormal/dystopian hardcovers I’ve read (most of which are signed), then my FAV SERIES EVER (again, most of which are signed. Not CInder & Scarlet yet). Then we go to TBRs/hardcover a shelf down and then my TBRs paperback a shelf down from that!
Think I’m going overboard with the organization…?

YArightsideNext up is the other side… More of my favorite series (for some reason I needed to keep the vampire books together even though it made shelving more complicated), down from there are my contemporary reads (which apparently seem to be REALLY lacking!), and then a shelf full of nice decorations 🙂
Then I’ve got my ARC side! Older ARCs that I’ve gotten from other people, YA Book Exchange, and rescued from thrift stores because they don’t belong there… Then my shelf of ARCs from BEA I still need to read. Below that, ARCs I’ve received for The Selective Collective, from Macmillan, and other books I want to read soon. Then below that, books I’ve borrowed from other people (seriously, don’t loan me books. You see my shelf now. You’ll never get them back because I don’t have time to read them haha) and the stack of books I’m GIVING AWAY!!!!

nonbooksLastly — and the least exciting — is all of my “non-reading books” all the way to the right. I’ve got my yearbooks, binders, old school stuff, and some photo albums on the top. Book related movies below it (all of my movies wouldn’t fit in the bookcase so I chose to display the book adaptations! HA!), my TV show DVDs beneath that (because you always need to display Friends! And that’s Shane’s mom’s DVDs of Downton Abbey. SERIOUSLY. DON’T LOAN THINGS TO ME), and just some more decorations on the bottom.

WELL. Those are my shelves! This is actually the first time I’ve really had a visual explanation of how I organize them and I’m actually kind of proud of them haha! I’m sure you all think I’m crazy now because my method of organization is RIDICULOUSLY specific. Oh, and in case you didn’t notice… Within those specific groups, they’re also organized by color. My bookcase has to be PRETTY, okay?

Okay, okay, I know you’re all excited for the giveaway so enough about me. Let’s give some books away! I have quite a hefty stack to give away — some old, some new, some hardback, some paperback — so I’ll pick three winners (all at the same time) and the first person will get first pick, then the second, then the third. I’m sure you’re curious what’s up for grabs, so here you go!

Moving/Summer Cleaning Giveaway! Last Day!

Okay friends, it’s THE LAST DAY of my “summer cleaning”/moving giveaway!

So before I move, I need to shed a few books that I’d like to pass along! It’s not a ton but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good gems in there! There are 15 books in all and I’m doing something different and a bit more complicated because I won’t lie. Sometimes I just get bored with the one Rafflecopter winner and with 15 books, I think there should be more than one person who gets their pick! SO. I’m going to do some “flash” giveaways. Here’s the deal:

  • Wed July 3rd through Wednesday July 9th, I will be doing a giveaway a day, each one lasting for ONE DAY ONLY. Just those 24 hours and that’s it! You will have that day to enter that giveaway. Then in the morning I’ll update with the previous day’s winner.
  • Each day’s giveaway will be for TWO books and the pile will dwindle down until there are no more left. For example: Day 1’s winner gets to pick ANY TWO books from the stack. Then Day 2’s winner gets to pick any two books that are left. Then Day 3’s winner gets to pick two books from the books that are left. I will update each day so you know what’s left! You won’t be going into the giveaways blind. That also means that…
  • If you ARE a winner, I’ll need you to respond by the end of the day, just to acknowledge what books you want so I can cut the pile down for the next giveaway. Please have your computer/phone/carrier pigeon handy so you can let me know what books you want if you’re the winner!
  • I’m buy a house, guys. Spending thousands of dollars here. So I’m sorry to say that these giveaways are US/Canda only. Sorry! Can’t afford international at the moment.
  • Each day will be open until 8pm CST at which point in time I will pick the winner, they pick their two books, and then I tell you what’s still left for the next day.

So that’s it! Sounds hectic but interesting and fun, right? Okay, good. Now let’s not waste any time and hop to it! Here’s a photo of my lovely stack of books that I’m offering up to you guys:

Moving/Summer Cleaning Giveaway!

Well. It’s July. I don’t quite know how that happened (Okay, it’s a simple explanation called time… but anyway) and that means two things: ONE is that I never had a spring cleaning of my bookshelves so I’m dubbing this a “summer cleaning” and TWO is that if all goes well, Shane and I will be closing on a house in almost exactly a month. A MONTH. AND WE OWN A HOUSE. I nearly freaked myself out there.

So before I move, I need to shed a few books that I’d like to pass along! It’s not a ton but that doesn’t mean there aren’t some good gems in there! There are 15 books in all and I’m doing something different and a bit more complicated because I won’t lie.
  • UPDATED RULES: I realized as I was thinking about picking a winner that I have to announce a winner and have them pick their books before I start the next day’s giveaways *smacks forehead* SO. Now each day will be open until 8pm CST at which point in time I will pick the winner, they pick their two books, and then I tell you what’s still left for the next day. Whoops. Sorry for the confusion, folks!.

So that’s it! Sounds hectic but interesting and fun, right? Okay, good. Now let’s not waste any time and hop to it! Here’s a photo of my lovely stack of books that I’m offering up to you guys:

The Book Addict’s Guide One Year Blogoversary!!!

blogoversary

Confetti!!!! Balloons!!!! My blog turns one year old today!!!

Hard to believe that’s it’s only a been a year since I started blogging. With all of the amazing people I’ve met, authors I’ve been honored to work with, big steps I’ve taken, and things I’ve learned, it feels like I’ve been blogging for at least a couple years!

Along with some fun giveaways (YES, those are coming), I’ve organized some fun facts for all of you who have helped make my blog such a success!

firsts

  • FIRST NAME: The first name for my blog was REVIEW, RELECT, RETROSPECT. I was almost a completely different name and I TOTALLY forgot about it until I was cleaning out old pictures the other day and found my original banner that I had made. Very strange.
  • FIRST FOCUS: When I first started my blog, I was obsessed with mysteries. I was going to be reviewing mysteries & chick lit… But when I started peeking around the book review blog community and saw all the YA out there, fresh after reading books like Delirium, Matched, and the Hunger Games, I was like, “Whaaaat? There are more awesome books like this out there?!” Slowly, I adapted my blog to include YA as a main focus until I gave in and (happily) let YA take over.
  • FIRST REVIEW: After an embarrassing welcome post that kicked off my blog on 4/10/12, I posted a review for A STUDY IN SCARLET by Arthur Conan Doyle. I kicked off my blog with a five star review! How about that…
  • FIRST HOST: I actually started my blog over on Blogger and quickly switched to WordPress. Nothing personal, but I just found WP much easier to work with!
  • FIRST COMMENT: The first person to comment on my blog chose to do so when they read my review for B is for Burglar by Sue Grafton on 4/26. I probably lost some comments due to the switch to WP, but then again… Maybe not haha. A big thanks to Elisa from Lost Inside the Covers for being the first person to comment who’s stuck with me through today!!! Your support of my blog is much appreciated! (Her comment was on my review for First to Die by James Patterson on 5/14/12.)

events
Here are few of my favorite events that I’ve been fortunate enough to be a part of over the past year!

  • Wild Worlds: Wild Worlds was an event that I came up with for my blog to feature primarily debut authors as a week-long feature of interviews, giveaways, and guest posts. I was SO surprised how many authors were willing to participate in Wild Worlds considering my blog was only a few months old at the time!! I definitely want to do Wild Worlds again this year so I guess I need to start looking for any authors who would like to participate!
  • Events at Anderson’s Bookshop: Fierce Reads, Five Good Reasons to Read, Ally Condie, Claudia Gray, Robin LaFevers – Anderson’s bookshop in Naperville, IL hosts SO many amazing authors and I’m so glad I live so close that I can go to so many events!!
  • A Fortnight of Fright was a feature that Alyssa from Books Take You Places and I put together for a fun Halloween event. It was two weeks of everything Halloween, from books to movies/TV shows, and even recipes!
  • Series Catch-Up: I implemented the Series Catch-Up challenge in October 2012 running through the end of the year to try to catch up on all those series I had started but never finished. I wanted to have this be a recurring challenge, but I realized someone else had a challenge similar to this that started after mine and someone else created a challenge for the full year of 2013. I decided not to risk the accusations of copying and plagiarism and all that junk so Series Catch-Up was a one-time only deal!
  • The Selective Collective: The Selective Collective evolved from our Casting Call feature. Along with four other blogs (The Grown-Up YA, Teen Lit Rocks, YA Crush, Gone Pecan), we feature an author and their new or upcoming release, highlighting it in various ways. It’s been such a blast working with these ladies as well as all those amazing authors & publishers out there!
