May Author Signings Recap & Giveaway!

Event: Author appearances by Lauren Oliver + Lauren Morrill + Lenore Appelhans, Richelle Mead, Pitch Dark Days Tour
Location: Anderson’s Bookshop, Naperville, IL
Date: May 2 – 9

So excited to finally be catching up on these author recaps! Anderson’s Bookshop (my local indie bookstore, for those of you who don’t know it) has had some AMAZING author events this month so far. I mean like, MY FAVORITE AUTHORS AND I GOT TO MEET THEM *happy dance*

LAUREN OLIVER, LAUREN MORRILL, LENORE APPELHANS
MAY 2, 2013

OMG, you guys. I was so nervous and excited to meet Lauren Oliver! She was one of the authors that even got me into YA in the first place!!! Meeting her was honestly a dream of mine, one of my “bucket list” authors, if you will. And don’t count out Lauren Morrill or Lenore Appelhans! I’ve been fortunate enough to work with BOTH of them for a Selective Collective feature, not to mention that MEANT TO BE was an instant favorite of mine!

  • Firstly, Chicago traffic and rain made L. Morrill and L. Appelhans late BUT, the lovely Lauren Oliver was there to entertain us and introduce each of the books being promoted AS each other. She did a great job as Lauren Morrill and Lenore Appelhans! Very funny. I actually didn’t IMG_1275expect Lauren Oliver to be that outspoken and “bossy” as she called herself, maybe just because her books carry such a serious tone! She was a blast to listen to and I really heard some interesting things about her writing process!
  • Did you know that Lauren Oliver’s BEFORE I FALL was written entirely on a Blackberry? I did not!! L. Morrill said “SEE, there are no excuses not to write!” which I totally commend, but I would never be able to concentrate writing on the subway or in transit like L. Oliver did!
  • It was really interesting to hear Lenore talk about how she came up with ideas for LEVEL 2! She knew she wanted memories to be involved and involving good memories as sort of a currency. Lenore is a world-traveler so most of Felicia’s travels were easy for Lenore to write! And sadly…. There really are no prancing goats. That was a total creation from Lenore!
  • Quick bragging moment: Each of the authors played a game where they decided to read a passage from the book that they were promoting. Since Lauren Oliver was promoting the third and a trilogy and didn’t want to spoil anything, I volunteered my copy of Delirium. So Lauren Oliver read from my copy of Delirium and call me crazy, but I honestly found it SO. COOL. that the author herself was reading the very same book and the very same words that I read and fell in love with. It was an awesome thing for me!
Reading from my copy of Delirium eeeeep

Of course I was extremely awkward when trying to talk to any authors because let’s face it… I always am, BUT I did get to take photos with all of them and they were all super sweet!

RICHELLE MEAD
MAY 5, 2013

100_2220

Okay, I know Richelle Mead is hugely popular and has had many, many books, but I had no idea that the crowd for this event was going to be that huge! Thankfully I come to these events alone (or not thankfully, because that sounds sad) so I was able to squeeze into a solo seat and not have to stand in the back for the whole event! I was SHOCKED to find out that probably about half of the people who were at this event came from two hours away or more (quite a few were four hours or more!!) so that just tells you the magnitude of her writing and the audience that she reaches!

  • Richelle started off by giving us a lengthy taste of THE FIERY HEART (Bloodlines #4) which actually alternates between Adrian’s & Sydney’s point of views. It was a darker & deeper side of Adrian and interesting to hear thoughts from his perspective. Usually I don’t like when books start with one narrator and switch to dual POVs, but I’m actually pretty anxious to hear what Adrian has to say!
  • The audience got to do a Q&A and there were some specific questions which Katie at The Polished Page Turner was kind enough to take notes on for her own recap of the event! I’m not a note taker so… I forgot all of them haha.
  • She talked about the MOVIE. I guess the guy who plays Dimitri, although most of us probably haven’t heard of him, is kind of a big deal in Russia so that’s pretty cool! I hope that the movie does the books justice because the VA series is one I felt come off SO well in books and I’m scared the wrong actors could ruin it! Hopefully not 🙂

We didn’t get to do any posed pictures since there were SO many people so I got some awkward photos as someone was nice enough to snap a few haha. I made THE MOST awkward conversation with Richelle as she was kind enough to sign my books by telling her that I almost didn’t pick up VA because it was “another vampire series”. Of course I went on to tell her that I love it (duh) and I’m so glad that I read them because they’re really unique! I hope she didn’t think I was TOO awkward. I really shouldn’t be allowed to talk to authors. I don’t know how I’ll survive BEA with my pride intact.

PITCH DARK DAYS TOUR
MAY 9, 2013

IMG_1308

Fierce Reads isn’t coming into town, but I got to go to the Pitch Dark Days tour!!! Aprilynne Pike, Amy Tintera, Elizabeth Norris, and Kiera Cass were all in attendance and a great group of ladies to meet!!

I was kind of overjoyed that……. I forgot everything that happened. With four authors, it was all kind of a daze (in a great way) but once again, Katie at The Polished Page Turner did a great write up about it so I can refer you to her page haha. I feel terrible that I don’t take notes at some of these things sometimes because I have no specifics to tell you but I feel awkward being on my phone the whole time or writing things down. I just feel like I’m not paying attention even though I’m taking notes! So I just watched and listened, smiled and laughed and had a grand old time!

True to form, I made awkward small talk with the authors (I’m just SO BAD at small talk. Why do I do this???) and took pictures will ALL OF THEM.

Also got to meet Alison from Harper! She was super sweet and a little ball of energy! She did a great job at moderating the event!! (Also a pretty awkward picture of me but… meh!)

The One With All the Author Signings: Claudia Gray, Robin LaFevers, Sarah Dessen

Authors

Event: Author appearances by Claudia Gray, Robin LaFevers, Sarah Dessen
Cancelled Event: Rainbow Rowell (*side eyes Anderson’s Bookshop for canceling*)
Location: Anderson’s Bookshop, Naperville, IL
Date: March – April

Okay, I’m the first to admit it. I was totally slacking on writing recap posts for the author signings I’ve been to lately. Spring is in the air and apparently that means author tours galore! There have been soooo many lately that I decided to combine some of them into one (and I say some because I still have two more events to go to in May that I’m VERY excited for).

Also another reason I’ve been slacking is that I never take notes or anything when I go to author events so I kind of feel like as soon as I leave, I forget everything because I’ve just been so dazzled by seeing such an amazing author. I’ll do my best to try to recap well for you (and not bore you).

CLAUDIA GRAY – MARCH 13, 2013

CG

Firstly, I went to go see Claudia Gray back in March. I was somewhat ashamed to admit that I haven’t read any of her books yet, but I had an ARC of her new book SPELLCASTER and it looked super interesting! For those of you who aren’t familiar with Claudia Gray, she’s also the author of the Evernight series, if that rings any bells!

It was a pretty small crowd at Anderson’s but I kind of liked it because it was more intimate and we got to do a lot of Q&A with Claudia. Here were some interesting things I learned from the signing:

  • She used to be a lawyer. We tossed around the notion that she may have gotten her organized and working well under pressure from law school OR maybe that’s why she did so well in law school! I thought that was really interesting though. Half the time I forget that authors have/had other jobs before they were writers!
  • The spells in SPELLCASTER are done by drawing up memories. The more powerful the memory, the more powerful the spell and obviously a person with more memories can draw up more of them and more vivid ones to create more powerful spells. I thought this was a really neat concept! I really like that there’s that extra element in there so that it isn’t just “can” or “can’t” as far as casting a spell.
  • She actually DID have some say in her cover for SPELLCASTER. I can’t remember what the original cover was and unfortunately this is where I stumble when I don’t take notes, but she DID say that she saw the original cover and just didn’t like the way it looked. It was the same girl, but it didn’t look true to the book (I THINK it was the girl holding her hands out or something and she thought it just looked hokey) so they repositioned the model and added the blue flame rising from her hand and voila! An awesome cover was born.
  • She has a book coming out in 2014 that will be a new series called the Firebird series (I think it’s a trilogy?) and OMFG you guys. This book sounds AMAZING. I honestly wish I had written it haha. It’s about a girl who can travel into different alternate realities, some of which are very similar to her own current world and some of which are entirely different. It just sounds absolutely incredible and I cannot wait for its arrival in 2014!

Claudia Gray was such a great person to meet! She was very talkative and seemed totally natural in front of people which was especially nice in front of a smaller bunch! We’re too timid to ask a lot of questions sometimes (I have GOT to start preparing questions beforehand) so it was nice to have an author who wasn’t afraid to hold her own up there!

ROBIN LAFEVERS – APRIL 7, 2013

RLF

Robin LaFevers!!!! Gosh, that was so exciting to be able to meet her. If you aren’t familiar with her books, she’s the amazing author of GRAVE MERCY and new release in April DARK TRIUMPH. I’ve never been one for historical fiction, but these books are so amazing. It was really great to hear Robin speak about her books because I found out alllll kinds of new stuff that I never knew before (I actually took notes on this one, guys)!

  • Robin LaFevers has ALWAYS been interested in historical fiction. She said even when she was two years old, she was interested in things like the medieval and Renaissance eras.
  • She never intended to write GRAVE MERCY. She called it her “affair” and was writing it on the side while she kept working on her middle grade series (which I also had no idea she wrote middle grade books — There are actually quite a few of them). GRAVE MERCY just really came together for her and she even surprised herself at how dark of a story this entire series was.
  • She started writing GM because she knew she wanted to read a book like it, so why not write it? She said that as a writer, sometimes you just have to write what you don’t see on the shelf and to write what you want to read!
  • She writes LOTS AND LOTS of drafts. I don’t know how she does it, but she ends up writing several drafts of these books before she gets to a good copy. GRAVE MERCY was in third person originally and she said that Ismae was getting lost on the pages because she WAS supposed to be behind the scenes. She ended up re-writing in first person to make Ismae really come alive and connect with the audience.

It was so great to meet Robin LaFevers and WOOOOO got my books personalized. Love, love, love.

RAINBOW ROWELL (CANCELLED) – APRIL 8, 2013

I was sooooo excited to go see Rainbow Rowell a couple weeks ago. UNTIL IT GOT CANCELLED. I have my suspicions as to why (which I am SUPER bummed about) and it was through no fault of Rainbow’s, that’s for sure! I absolutely loved ELEANOR & PARK so I was incredibly sad that I didn’t get a chance to meet her, especially when she was still in town and everything! I guess I’ll just have to find her at BEA.

SARAH DESSEN – APRIL 19, 2013

SD

Sarah Dessen, guys! How could I NOT go? I have a small confession……… I haven’t read any of her books yet! EEK, don’t kill me! I have three of them and I definitely plan on reading them soon! Seriously. I promise! I have been assured by everyone that I WILL love them (and I believe you!)

Anyway, Sarah was a blast to listen to! She has a natural grace and casual demeanor that made it seem like she’d been friends with everyone in the room for years! Even though I wasn’t as familiar with her books, it was so much fun to hear her talk about all of them and what made each one of them special for her.

I apologize for the lack of details about Sarah Dessen, but it’s hard to remember when I haven’t read the books yet 🙁 Shame on me!!! She was so incredibly nice though and this was one of those times where meeting the author just makes me want to read their books even more. (Okay, that’s all the time… But you know what I mean.) I love hearing all of the personal connections. They really make a book that much more special. Now I can’t wait to start reading!

Kind of an awkward picture, but fun all the same!

As a special bonus, fellow blogger Rachel from Rachel Reads came down from Wisconsin to see Sarah Dessen so we got to meet at the signing! I still don’t know a ton of bloggers from the general area (I’ve only met a few) so it was so much fun to meet someone that I talk to a lot via our blogs and Twitter!

GIVEAWAY

Oh yes, there is a giveaway! I don’t have books from every author mentioned in this post, BUT I do have two of them to give away to one lucky winner! The giveaway is for a signed ARC of SPELLCASTER by Claudia Gray and a hardcover of ELEANOR & PARK by Rainbow Rowell. I really wanted to get E&P signed for the giveaway but alas, no such luck. They are still pretty great prizes though 🙂

Ally Condie Author Signing Event – November 14, 2012

Event: Ally Condie apperance and book signing
Location: Anderson’s Bookshop, Naperville, IL
Date: Wednesday, November 14, 2012

Here’s a little recap from the Ally Condie event this past Wednesday!

The majority of the we had Q&A with Ally which was so much fun! She’s incredibly nice and it really felt like we were just having a dialogue. She used to be a high school teacher (before she had her first child) so she felt totally natural being up in front of a crowd and it was so nice.

Um… I didn’t take very good notes on this questions? But I actually got the chance to ask her a question which was how long it usually takes her to write a first draft. I’m still in the wake of being entirely upset with NaNo so I while I was  admittedly a little bitter still, I’m trying to actually come up with a better-suited story line for me to actually take my time on so I was entirely curious to talk to an actual author and see how long her first drafts take her! She responded with about 9 months for a fully readable first draft so that also made me feel like PHEW. I think I can actually take my time on a novel and with the right topic, do it right.

Yay, signed copy!

We got to hear how Ally came up with the idea for Matched (based on a Junior Prom she once chaperoned combined with a discussion between her and her husband about marriage) and so the idea was born!
Ally also said that as far as covers go, she has no say in the matter, but she really does love them! I guess the girl on the front cover is actually the photographer. She takes self-portraits and then they get turned into the covers that we see. I thought that was really interesting!

Signed Poster

I always love meeting authors whose books I enjoy, but it’s also great to meet authors whose books I haven’t read yet (or in this case, the middle of the series). I think meeting someone first and then being able to read their work, you really get to see a lot more of their personality in the book so I’m really looking forward to reading Reached!
