Book Blogger Love-A-Thon: Questionnaire

BANNER - 2015 LOVEATHON

2015 Book Blogger Love-a-Thon
Hosted by: Alexa Loves Books
Dates: February 21-22, 2015, 9AM-9PM EST

This part of the Love-a-thon has previously been an interview swap, but this year it’s a questionnaire which I also enjoy very much! Get to know a little bit more about me and my blog with this year’s questionnaire! I can’t wait to meet more people and get to know the ones I love even better!

 QUESTIONNAIRE

What’s your name? Brittany from The Book Addict’s Guide

Where in the world are you blogging from? I live in an outer suburb of Chicago — if you know Naperville, it’s about 25 minutes southwest (almost as close as you can go the cornfields without hitting the country!)

How did you get into blogging in the first place? Back in 2012, my friend Lisa and I (who is now back in town! Yay!) got obsessed with this used bookstore (RIP Bundles of Books) and we kept going back and buying soooo many used books. I started reading a lot more because of it and felt like I wanted to do something with all of the thoughts in my head about these books. I must have been feeling creative that day and Goodreads just wasn’t enough because I thought about starting a blog and just sort of went for it!

How did you come up with your blog name? See above! I started buying waaaaay too many books (hence the book addict part) and I wanted to be able to share my reviews with people to help them choose their next read. (At the time, I thought I was going to be VERY influential… somehow haha. I was a bit delusional about what I would do with my blog. I kind of thought people would read it but at the same time didn’t even expect it.) It actually started off as “The Book Addict’s Guide to Reading” but I eventually dropped the “to Reading” part because it was long and made me sound a bit pretentious haha.

What genre do you read and review the most on your blog? It’s changed a lot over the years. I started out with most adult cozy mysteries and YA dystopian with a splash of adult contemporary. Now it’s more YA contemporary and fantasy with a bit of adult fantasy and contemporary, and of course other YA genres like sci-fi, paranormal, and still some dystopian but I find it hard to find a really good one nowadays since I exhausted that genre a bit!

What other types of posts do you do on your blog, apart from reviews? I have a few different features that I host on my blog — Book and a Beverage is a blogger spotlight & interview feature which I post every Thursday with a new blogger (and their book/beverage, of course)! I also have features that I post periodically like My Latest Bookish Addiction, where I share my… well, latest bookish addiction haha!
I’m also hosting the Book Blogger Organization Challenge where I invite bloggers to make plans to do all of the maintenance and behind-the-scenes aspects of blogging! There are lots of reading challenges which I LOVE but I’m more in need of the organization side of things.
There are also a few features I host with other bloggers! A group read & post with my besties that we call On the Same Page (we also host Twitter chats and ARC tours, as well as the OTSPSecretSister project and A Fortnight of Fright during Halloween season) and a book and beer feature called Pub Date!
ALSO, the usual things that aren’t special features like discussions, interviews, blog tours, and even my own handy-dandy infographics/reading guides!

Best blogging experience so far? Gah, there are quite a few that have totally made my blogging life! The first one that comes to mind is the Fall Fierce Reads tour stop in Chicago from this past October (2014). I was not only asked to be the featured blogger on the stop (meaning I got to interview the authors and give some amazing books away) but I was also asked to MODERATE THE EVENT. *dies* It was so nerve-wracking but in the BEST possible way! Know what made it EVEN BETTER? Marissa Meyer was one of the authors I got to meet and interview!!! (And we all know how obsessed I am with The Lunar Chronicles!)
After that, I’d have to say all of the events I’ve been to! Meeting bloggers at events like BEA 2013 and 2014, ALA 2015, and all of the Anderson’s events… it’s been so amazing!

10312357_981376248554517_2335301704717270163_n

Favorite thing about the blogging community? The people! I’ve honestly made some best and life-long friends through this community! It’s so amazing to meet so many people that I connect with on so many levels and I know that some of these friendships will last for a lifetime!

img1108

Name the 5 books you’re most excited for this 2015! Just five!? That’s hard! Hmmm. I’ll Meet You There by Heather Demitrios (I have my copy now but still need to read it!), The Orphan Queen by Jodi Meadows (March), Liars Inc by Paula Stokes (March), The Fill-In Boyfriend by Kasie West (May), Resonance by Erica O’Rourke (July), Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman (September), The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater (September), Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (October also omgggg), Winter by Marissa Meyer (November also omgggg then my world ends goodbye)

What’s an underrated book or series that you think everyone should read? I’m actually going to say Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. I read it as a kid and LOVED it, re-read as an adult and still LOVED it and I think if you haven’t read it before, it’s never too late. Maybe it’s just because I had such a strong connection to it but I know several others who love it as well!

Which book boy or girl would be your book BFF? Male BFF (assuming he’s taken) is Captain Carswell Thorne from The Lunar Chronicles. LOVE a scoundrel and he seems like he’d be SO much fun, a blast to hang out with, and an all-out riot. Female BFF, I want to hang out with Anna Oliphant from Anna and the French Kiss. I just think we’d CLICK and I want to hang out with her and her friends!

Apart from reading, what are your other hobbies or interests? WELL those are most of my interests haha! But Shane (my husband) and I love to homebrew together (that’s brew our own beer in case there was a question — I’m assuming you know but you never know!) and we love to travel, go camping, and occasionally take on home improvement projects. I used to scrapbook but I just haven’t had the time for it! I’m hoping to eventually get back into some craft stuff but I need to sort out all of my time schedules first!

Apart from book shopping, what else do you like shopping for? Well book shopping is #1. I really don’t go shopping for clothes or shoes, etc (seriously just bought new work clothes for the first time in… oh, 8 months? I don’t go shopping haha) but occasionally I’ll go thrifting with my friend Lisa (but that can’t count because we’re mainly hunting down books)! I was going to say I like going to the liquor store but that makes me sound like a boozebag… what I MEAN is like I like picking out new beers and trying new craft beers! I also love buying things off of Amazon because I’m too lazy to go to the real store and when I do, I’m often buying too many things that I don’t need at Target.

At a party, the DJ suddenly changes the song – and it’s your song. What song would be playing? Oh gosh, I have become that person who listens to their book on tape and doesn’t listen to music anymore. I really don’t have any jams right now but I do have a Motion City Soundtrack CD on constant loop in my car whenever I’m done with my audiobooks so we’ll pretend like that’s a good answer.

Pick out either a book you want turned into a film/TV show, or a film/TV show you want turned into a book. The Lunar Chronicles!!!! Omg I NEED this series to be made into movies… but I would also be very, very scared. And let’s talk about how ALL THE BRIGHT PLACES has already been optioned and my heart is already breaking.

Thanks for getting to know more about me! I can’t wait to check out everyone else’s questionnaires and getting to know more about them too!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014: Blogger Awards!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014Once again, I’m writing my Love-A-Thon post at the last minute AHHHH! So my apologies, it’s going to be pretty basic haha. Shane and I have been running around all day: Reception hall open house, staining the bookcase (see: Twitter), and now stopping by his parent’s house really quickly (but still for like a hour or so). So sorry this is insanely quick and basic! Trust me, this in no way reflects how much I love you guys (because it’s a LOT and I just haven’t had time to prettify it up!)

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014: Mash-Ups!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014Okay, friends! This mini-challenge is a mash-up of bookish life and real life. One of things I love to do is travel and really outside of reading, I don’t have THAT many hobbies hahaha. So I’m mashing up books and places I’ve been! I always love being able to see that place in my mind when I read a book and it’s really exciting when I can picture a setting that’s happening in a book!

BETTER OFF FRIENDS — MILWAUKEE AREA

BETTER OFF FRIENDS was actually in the Milwaukee suburbs which is where my sister lives. I’ve passed Miller Park many times and Shane and I have even had our own little weekend in Milwaukee (aside from the times we’ve visited my sister). I don’t actually have many photos of the Milwaukee suburbs so I’ll share my pictures of our events around the city!

THE BOOK OF BROKEN HEARTS — COLORADO

Colorado is beautiful. There were a few scenes where the characters actually go up into the mountains and I could totally picture exactly what was going on! Here are the images that were in my head:

NANTUCKET BLUE and SUCH A RUSH (Not actually Nantucket or South Carolina)

I haven’t actually been to Nantucket and I’ve only been to South Carolina suburbs, so my frame of reference was along the lines of where Shane’s parents have their beach house in North Carolina. I could totally see similarities although, understandably, they’re not the same!

TIME BETWEEN US and DIVERGENT — Chicago area

I’m from the Chicago suburbs so it’s pretty easy for me to picture books that take place in Chicago! I actually pictured TIME BETWEEN US much like my own high school even though it wasn’t in Evanston, but it definitely had the same feel!

So that’s it! Those are my places! I actually could probably come up with a few more but I had to put this post together before I left for the day (our wedding reception venue has an open house!) so it’s a little hasty, but I had a lot of fun!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014: Spine Poetry

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014I actually did my spine poetry  just last night and just like last year, it kind of got away from me hahaha. It was actually really fun and honestly, I love staring at my books and figuring out new ways to organize them. I’m staining the bookcase this weekend so they’re currently in piles on my floors so it was actually kind of perfect timing! It gave me a sense of accomplishment haha.

Okay, picture of the books first and then you get to read it as the poem below! (Don’t mind my messy house!)

(And sorry this was kind of confusing — they’re all one giant poem, not three separate ones!)

IMG_2383

spinepoetry

Whew! That was so much fun! My poems always turn out so dark… Probably because I have so many dystopians and paranormals haha! What did you guys think?? I had an absolute blast coming up with it!!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014: Interview Swap!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon 2014

I’m so excited to be participating in the BOOK BLOGGER LOVE-A-THON again this year, hosted by Alexa and Katelyn! First thing today is the interview swap and I’m super excited to have interviewed KIM from THE NOMADIC BOOK HOARDER!

Brittany: I love that your blog is called The Nomadic Book Hoarder! (I am a book addict after all…) How did you end up deciding to start a book blog?
Kim:
Thank you! I have been reading book blogs for so long, but I was always a lurker! I’ve wanted to start my own book blog for quite a while, but I was hesitant because I’m not a native English speaker. I knew there were more international bloggers, but it was always holding me back. The funny thing is that Twitter made me start my own book blog. When I joined Twitter, I started following all my favorite book bloggers and I learned how much fun bloggers were having recommending each other books and talking about books and fangirling over books. And then I knew, this was a great community for me, because I want to talk about books all the time, but my family and friends are getting sick of it. And that’s how after  years of being a lurker I finally joined the book blogging community!

B: I saw from your blog that you just started blogging this past July! What’s your favorite thing about blogging so far?
K: My favorite thing is definitely getting to know other bloggers and connecting with so many people! I’m a very newbie blogger but the welcoming in the book blog community has been great 😀 I’m so glad to have made bookish friends (because before blogging I didn’t have any friends who read!). I also love that I’m writing again. Not stories, but writing blog posts counts as writing to me. I used to write all the time in my teens but I gave up when I went to uni.

B: What’s one of your favorite posts that you’ve written so far? Was there any special reason it meant so much to you?
K:
I personally love to read discussion posts on other blogs, they are my favorite kind of posts. I have written a few myself and I’m proud of them because I found them so hard to write, much harder than reviews for example. My favorite discussion I’ve written is the post where in I share my thoughts on J.K. Rowling’s Ron/Hermione revelation, because I love the Harry Potter books and Ron/Hermione is my OTP. This was near to my heart and I needed to write this post, because I had to vent about it.
Another favorite post of mine is my review of Get Well Soon by Julie Halpern. It’s a one-star review (which I don’t like), but also a very personal post and that’s why I like it.

B: If you could pick one book or series to live in, which would it be?
K: Okay, first thing on my mind was Throne of Glass because of CHAOL. But then I thought I wouldn’t actually want to live in that world and also Chaol should be with Celaena haha. Not that he would pick me over Celaena, but you know, a swooning fangirl can be quite annoying!
I love this question, but it’s also very hard to answer because most of my favorite books have worlds I’d never want to live in (like most fantasy and dystopian worlds)! Like, I love the idea of living in Hogwarts, but not during the events in the book! No, I’d much rather be a student there AFTER the Battle of Hogwarts. So, I’m picking Pivot Point. It’s still in our world, so I wouldn’t need to adjust too much, but I would get an awesome mind power ability! AND there’s no evil wizards or scary monsters.

B: What’s one book that you really, personally connected with? (Either a recent read or one from your childhood!) Was there any specific reason why?
K: When I was in my teens I read and loved the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series and I really connected with it. This is because I could see myself so clearly in one of the main characters (Lena), and I related to her so much that it hurt. In a good way, mind you. I used to reread these books every summer (summer seemed fitting!) and I cried every time during some of her chapters.
Two years ago I read Sisterhood Everlasting, the final book in the series that follows the main characters ten years after the fourth book. And I could still see myself in Lena.

B: You’re stranded on a deserted island and can only bring three books with you! Which would they be?
K: Ah this is so hard, because do I choose my favorite books or books that I cherish for other reasons (like signed copies)? Hmm…I would definitely go for favorite books that I could re-read again and again, because those signed copies are awesome but I wouldn’t have any shelves on the island to showcase them.
I will bring Tiger Lily and Persuasion with me, because they are two of my all-time favorite books and I can re-read them and not get bored of them. Also, I’m cheating because I’m bringing the Harry Potter box set with me, so I’ll have the whole series with me! Actually, being stranded on a deserted island would be perfect right now, because I can finally reread the entire Harry Potter series as that is something I’ve been meaning to do for ages. As long as you pick me up after I’ve finished it, I don’t want to be stranded forever, lol!

B: Do you have any special reading or blogging goals/ideas/posts in mind for 2014?
K:
I do have some new type of posts planned. You might have noticed the ‘Nomadic’ in my blog name and wondered what it is doing there. Well, besides reading I LOVE travel and when I started my blog I wanted to write a lot of travel posts too and have my blog name reflect that, hence the ‘Nomadic’. But I never got around to it, because I loved writing about books to much! But this year I am going to write some travel related posts and have a few planned. But I don’t have any specific goals in mind for this year. I just want to continue having fun with blogging and meeting other bloggers!

Thanks so much to Kim for the interview!!! It was great getting to know a new blogger! Please do check out her blog and say hello!! I’ve already been chatting with her on Twitter since we got paired up and she’s pretty awesome! And don’t forget to check out Kim’s interview with me over at her blog too!

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon: Playlist for [Just One Day]

It’s the Book Blogger Love-A-Thon, hosted by Alexa & Katelyn!

I LOVE playlists. And making playlists for books? How about a big HELL YEAH.

I was trying to figure out what book to make a playlist for and I was like, there can only be one that will fit ALL OF MY FEELINGS in a book AND in music form. And the answer to that? JUST ONE DAY by the one and only Gayle Forman.

1. “Time Above the Earth” – The Kooks

THE LYRICS:
Then I get off the plane

A thousand thoughts reaching through my brain
Like, Am I here beneath you, at all
Will I see her again?
If I do, will I feel the same?
And am I really here, at all

2. “Holiday” – Vampire Weekend

THE LYRICS:
So if I wait for a holiday
Could it stop my fear?
To go away on a summer’s day
Never seemed so clear

3. “Simple Girl” – Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr.

THE LYRICS:
She’s a simple girl
and she’s got simple feelings.
No one ever let her know that she could get it out her heart, now.

4. “I’ll Believe in Anything” – Wolf Parade

THE LYRICS:
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Give me your eyes
I need sunshine
Your blood
Your bones
Your voice
and your ghost

5. “If She Wants Me” – Belle and Sebastian

THE LYRICS:
If I could do just one near perfect thing I’d be happy
They’d write it on my grave, or when they scattered
my ashes
On second thoughts I’d rather hang about and be there with my best friend
If she wants me

6. “Une Annee Sans Lumiere” – Arcade Fire

THE LYRICS:
Okay so I don’t actually know most of them, but it’s one of the only songs I have in my iTunes library that has French in it 🙂

7. “My Mirror Speaks” – Death Cab for Cutie

THE LYRICS:
I always fall in love with an open door
With a horizon on an endless sea
As I look around the ones who were standing right in front of me

8. “Basket Case” – Sara Bareilles

THE LYRICS:
You’re beggin’ for the truth
So I’m sayin’ it to you
I’ve been saving your place
And what good does it do?
Now I’m just a basket case

9. “Light Outside” – Wakey!Wakey!

THE LYRICS:
I know you wanna stay in bed
But it’s light outside
It’s light outside
So know I’m gonna stay right here
You saved my life once

10. “Kill” – Jimmy Eat World

THE LYRICS:
Could it be that everything goes ’round by chance?
Or only one way that it was always meant to be
You kill me, you always know the perfect thing to say (hey hey, hey hey)
I know what I should do, but I just can’t walk away

11. “Closer” – The Fold

THE LYRICS:
He should’ve held her closer,
When it was all he had to do.
When it was all he had to prove
To all his closest friends that she was a bright and beaming light.
A beacon in the night.
I rest on a vision of the shoreline glistening,
The two of us in love.

12. “My Father the Sailor” – The Robbery

THE LYRICS:
Give me an endless summer

And the chance to find myself
Give me the guts to leave here
For the start of something else

13. “I Will Wait” – Mumford and Sons

THE LYRICS:
So break my step
And relent
You forgave and I won’t forget
Know what we’ve seen
And him with less
Now in some way
Shake the excess

But I will wait, I will wait for you…

SO much fun making this playlist! And as always, you can find my playlists on 8tracks.com – Just follow the link here to listen to it in full! Just One Day soundtrack

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon: Spine Poetry

It’s the Book Blogger Love-A-Thon, hosted by Alexa & Katelyn!

Okay, so I originally wasn’t going to do the spine poetry because I’m totally not a big poetry person…. But after reading all of the awesome poems by my fellow bloggers today, I just HAVE to make one of my own!! So Here it goes…

Shades of Earth.
Shadowlands Reached What’s Left of Me.

The Lost Girl. Daughter of Smoke and Bone. The Madman’s Daughter.
Something Strange and Deadly Struck When She Woke.

Sweet Evil. Shadow and Bone. Pandemonium. The Chaos!

If I Stay Unremembered… Erasing Time.
The Forsaken. Forgotten.

The Body Finder… The Sky Is Everywhere… Unearthly.

So there it is! Turned out kind of dark, huh? I like it though! Hope you enjoy 🙂

Book Blogger Love-A-Thon: Interview Swap!

Time to start the Book Blogger Love-A-Thon, hosted by Alexa & Katelyn!

We kick off the Love-A-Thon at 12am (WHEW that’s early!) with an interview swap. I was fortunate enough to be paired with Vi who blogs at Confessions of a Vi3t Babe. She’s a book blogger, but also a mom and you can see her love and dedication in each of her posts! I had a great time interviewing her. I know you’re anxious for the questions, so check them out!

1. How did you first decide to start blogging? Can you tell us a little about your blog?

I actually started it when I was bored in my early days of Medical school. I didn’t pay much attention to it though, it was just there. Then, when my husband and I decided to try and have another baby, I turned it into a blog chronicling my trying to get pregnant. After that, it was about me being pregnant, then recording all the memorable moments in my baby’s life. Along the way I did a ton of product reviews and then I started blogging about books. Yes, books seem to be the main focus of my blog right now, but I really just want my blog to be a place where I write about whatever I want, what I’m passionate about. Right now, that’s books and my family. So you’ll see a lot of that. Who knows what the future holds and which way I’ll sway. I like to think of myself as a nicheless or lifestyle blogger.

2. Which genre is your favorite to read? How did that end up becoming your favorite?

I think my tastes have changed or have been fine-tuned over the years. It used to just be YA in general, anything really. After reading so many different genres in YA, I know that I love PNR. That’s probably my favorite, but I do have high standards for it since I read so many. It all started with Twilight, cliche I know, and then it really kicked in when I read Half-Blood by Jennifer Armentrout (my fav author). Besides that, I love Contemporary Romance, especially New Adult nowadays, but any Contemp works for me, as long as there’s more to the story than just the romance. Yes, I’m a sucker for the love, but a story has got to have a good plot for me to love it.

3. What’s the most exciting bookish/blogging event that you’ve been able to be a part of?

I’ve been to SO many over the years, and a ton in the recent months, but my favorite would have to be when I met my favorite author, Jennifer Armentrout, for the 1st time at YA Fest. She’s a gem! But besides that, I think I really love the the BIG events, like the NY Teen Author Fest, PAYA, etc. I really hope I can go to BEA or RT one day!

4. Playing off your blog name “Confessions of a Vi3t Babe”, do you have bookish confessions you’re willing to share? (For example, any reading quirks or peeves?)

My biggest pet peeve is that I can’t stand dog-earred pages. When people do it in front of me, I die a little inside. It seriously pains me! LOL. Personally though, when I read hardcovers, I like to take the dust jacket off because it really just gets in the way, and I don’t want to mess it up. I used to only be able to read one book at a time, but over the last year I’ve changed completely and can read up to 5-6 books at a time! Oh, and I’m meticulous when it comes to buying physical books. I like my books in the best possible condition and will scour a bookstore’s shelves for the perfect one.

5. What is your one must-read book that you recommend to other YA fans?

I can’t pick just ONE! LOL! I always recommend ANY and ALL Jennifer Armentrout books because I’m a serious fanatic! I even created a fansite for her and her books called Deity Island. My favorite series from her is the Covenant series. Oh, Aiden! JLA aside, I always think about Touch by Jus Accardo, Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry, or Of Poseidon by Anna Banks.

6. What is the most rewarding thing about blogging for you?

It’s really when I get comments or emails saying they wanna read a book because I recommended it. I LOVE it when that happens and give myself a pat on the back for that, because then it really feels like people value my opinion and judgement. I’ve always loved the feeling of being the one to recommend something to someone, whether it be a song, book, restaurant, etc. I always cherish each one of those moments!

7. What’s your most prized book in your home library? Can you tell us a little about what makes it so special?

This would probably be my ARC copy of Deity by Jennifer Armentrout. First off, it was given to me by JLA herself, which was EPIC enough, but then I saw that she mentioned ME in her dedication! OMFG! I was speechless! Not to mention that book is freaking fantastic, probably my favorite in the series. I can’t love it enough!

8. What do you look forward to in your future of blogging? Do you have any events or features coming up that we should be on the lookout for?

I really hope more people become aware that I’m out there and that I can connect with more like-minded readers. I also want to get back to my roots and start blogging about other things besides books. I do have some features like It’s a Viet Thing, where I talk about Vietnamese traditions. I’d like to talk more about entertainment, especially book-to-movie news, and just a ton of other things. I never know where my mind and interests will take me. I do have the Companion Novels Challenge going on with Alexa Loves Books. Plus, a ton of things going on on the fansite. Busy! Busy! Busy!

Thanks so much to Vi for the interview!!! It was great getting to know a new (well, new to me!) blogger! Please do check out her blog and say hello!

And don’t forget to check out Vi’s interview with me over at her blog!
