As Seen on Bookstagram | A Bookish Candle & Bookish Coffee

After five years of blogging, sometimes it’s hard to come up with new ideas. So much has changed over the years, including my blogging style, many times over, and I’ve gotten so much more into taking photos and posting on Instagram as a part of my love of books and bookish merch!

In an attempt to keep things interesting and fun, I wanted to started a little something new for me where I take a post that I had originally shared on Instagram — or “bookstagram” for those in the book community — and took it a little further in a blog post. There’s a limited  number of characters that you can share on Insta and the point of those posts is more to get to the point, rather than writing a whole narrative, but sometimes each post deserves a few extra words, and “As Seen on Instagram” is a fun way for me to do that!

On Sunday, I managed to snag a small moment of relaxation before heading to the shop for another long day of making candles! These moments have been few and far between so it was extra special to take some time to drink my coffee and inhale the smells of one of my favorite bookish candles that I liked to save for weekend mornings!

Today I wanted to share a few of my favorite things with you and some recent bookish obsessions! These are some awesome companies that you should definitely check out if you haven’t already!

THE COFFEE | First, let’s start with the coffee. It’s bookish! There are so many tea companies out there but I’m really not a tea person so I was so excited to find a book-themed coffee company! They’re called Book Lover’s Coffee (easy enough to remember, right?) and they sell whole bean AND ground coffee. If you don’t have a coffee grinder for the whole bean products, you can request to have it ground prior to shipping so don’t let that hold you back! There are several different flavors and they run from generally bookish to relating directly to a book or series. My personal favorite is Book Haul which is vanilla and cinnamon! It comes pre-ground since the cinnamon pieces would be too hard on a normal grinder and it’s positively delicious! The pricing is pretty reasonable for a small business selling some pretty good coffee too!

THE MUG | This Ravenclaw mug is one of my new favorite things (well, I guess it’s not THAT new. I got it as a birthday gift last March (I can’t remember if it was Alyssa or Amy who got it for me but it was from my best friend — that covers it haha!) and it’s from Little Paper Mama! I actually don’t know if she’s still selling them (they’re not currently listed in her Etsy store as of today) but her lettering and artwork is gorgeous! She does have a Stars Hollow mug and lots of prints, bookmarks, and more! I love the lettering on this Ravenclaw mug and it’s simple yet perfect!

THE CANDLE | Last but certainly not least is my current favorite bookish candle. I love Laura from Three Knocks Candles and she sent this #amwriting candle to me and I am SO THANKFUL she did because since I’m not a writer, I probably wouldn’t have purchased it for myself… But the scents are heavenly!! I love Laura’s candles because she has an amazing knack for blends and some really creative ones that I wouldn’t normally think to put together (and I also do this for a living haha!). The #amwriting candle combines coffee, cedarwood, and patchouli which blends to create an earthy blend behind a coffee top note. I don’t normally like patchouli a whole lot but it really adds to the feel of the candle more than taking center stage, and I never knew that cedar and coffee made such an interesting combination! It’s my favorite candle to burn in the mornings while I’m drinking my coffee and I highly recommend it, writer or not!

Have you tried any of these bookish companies? What’s your go-to for candles & coffee?

If you want to read the original post, check it out above or head to my Instagram page where you can follow for all kinds of bookish photo updates!

** Note: I am not a rep for any of these companies nor did they ask me to post about their products, but some if not all of them have Instagram reps with coupon codes so be sure to check out their pages to find those! I’m just sharing things that I love! **

Blog Tour: There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins | Book-Inspired Candle + Giveaway!

Welcome to the blog tour for

Stephanie Perkins is one of my favorite authors and I’m so obsessed with ANNA AND THE FRENCH KISS! I was so excited to read THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE, which is the very first Stephanie Perkins book (aside from short stories) outside of the Anna-verse! I don’t normally read horror but I do enjoy books exactly like this — a little mystery, a little thriller, and pretty much a 90s slasher movie! I’m way too chicken to read scary horror but I do love the thriller murder-mystery!

Before we jump into the tour, let’s take a second to check out some details about the book:

Scream meets YA in this hotly-anticipated new novel from the bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss.

One-by-one, the students of Osborne High are dying in a series of gruesome murders, each with increasing and grotesque flair. As the terror grows closer and the hunt intensifies for the killer, the dark secrets among them must finally be confronted.

International bestselling author Stephanie Perkins returns with a fresh take on the classic teen slasher story that’s fun, quick-witted, and completely impossible to put down.

Stephanie Perkins is the New York Times bestselling author of Anna and the French Kiss. She has always worked with books—first as a bookseller, then as a librarian, and now as a novelist. Stephanie lives in the mountains of North Carolina with her husband. Every room of their house is painted a different color of the rainbow.

Ever since I started making candles, I’ve been so much more in tune with the sensory notes in the books that I read. I feel like aromas in a book are easily skipped over and forgotten once a reader has finished because noticing and committing a smell to memory is such a unique experience that it’s harder hang onto if you haven’t experienced it first hand. I know at least for me, when a book draws on a familiar smell, I’m instantly hit with memories and nostalgia that have the potential to tie me to a book more than any other scenic description so I feel like those smells that add to the atmosphere are not to be overlooked!

I usually try to pick out specific scent descriptions in books, but when you’re reading a murder mystery like THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE, so many of those scents tend to be… unpleasant haha! But not to worry — there was still plenty more to choose from even if they weren’t specifically mentioned.

THERE’S SOMEONE INSIDE YOUR HOUSE takes place in the fall, specifically around Halloween, and fall scents are my FAVORITE scents. The book also takes place in the cornfields of the midwest, so there are a lot of outdoors, fields, and corn inspirations to draw upon. The overall feel of this candle is Halloween in the midwest, with delicious fall spices cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg, a touch of softer harvest fruits, fallen leaves, hay, and grain. It’s a lovely overall combination and I had so much fun making this candle for the book and one of my favorite authors!

Top notes: cinnamon, clove, nutmeg
Middle notes: fallen leaves, hay
Base notes: harvest fruits, grain

So what do you think?! Which scents do you think are the strongest sensory inspirations? Which are your favorites?

Holiday Gift Guide for Book Addicts 2015 | Candles

gifts for book lovers

I know it’s a bit early to start thinking about Christmas but I KNOW some people have already started thinking about the holidays (and a select few have been dying for Christmas for months… or all year-round, whatever) so it’s that time again to start compiling the lists of all of my favorite bookish gifts! I’ve discovered so many more companies that great some awesome gifts for fandoms and book lovers that I’ve decided to split this year’s guide into a few posts so as not to bog you down with everything in one huge post. First up, bookish candle shops!

love literary-themed candles. I didn’t use to be a candle person but I’ve gotten so much more into them over the past year… probably because there are so many awesome companies that make book-themed candles and I just can’t resist!! Here are some of my favorites:

** Please also note I am NOT getting any sort of commission for mentioning these companies! If any store has contacted me regarding a special feature in this post it has been noted. **

Fandlemonium makes some BIG candles (as in big in size). Compared to the 8oz size that many companies produce, Fandlemonium’s candles mostly run 16oz for a glass jar. From Disney to Stan Lee to Sherlock, Fandlemonium has a nice selection of fandoms to choose from (sadly it looks like their Harry Potter candles are gone — I’m guessing because of naming since I’ve seen that happen to a few other shops that aren’t allowed to use specifics anymore!) and the scents sound just delightful.

FROSTBEARD STUDIO Etsy Shop is one of the first places that I ever saw literary and fandom candles! They have 8oz jars, and sets of 6/3oz tarts with a few variety packs to choose from as well. You can pick some fandom specific ones like The Shire, Winterfell, and Cliffs of Insanity or just plain old bookish scents like “Old Books” and “Bookstore”. I’ve bought from them a few times and received them as gifts and I’m always so satisfied with their products!

From the Page is another Etsy shop that features a variety of candles as well as wax tarts and lip balms.  I’ve been eyeing up SO many of these, I can’t even tell you, BUT I’m trying to buy things as gifts and not for myself!! You can get scents like Peeta’s Cakes, Mother of Dragons, and Pemberley. There are also some nice pick two, three, or four bundles if you want to buy candles for multiple friends (and get a deal)!

I actually JUST stumbled upon Geek Nest so I don’t know much about them yet but it you’re looking for some more fandom candles in the realm of Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings, check them out! They’ve got a smaller 4oz size candle as well as 8oz.

I’ve also been eyeing these candles for a long time. They have some great scents like Dark Arts, Loki, and Winter Is Coming along with some non-fandom scents, lip balms, roll on scents, and more! It’s a very versatile shop and I may have to make a purchase from here soon…

This shop is really neat. They actually have tons of fandom stuff, so much more than candles, but I’m including them in the candle post because they have some really neat fandom-themed pillars. Game of Thrones, Harry Potter, Once Upon a Time and more — from candles to jewelry to coasters… This shop really has it all!

Hearth and Hammer is a local candle store that’s actually only about 25 minutes from my house! I found them on Instagram but clearly I need to go visit their actual store since it’s so close to me! They have some fun literary candles and it looks like even more in their Batavia store, but only the candles are sold online. You can also buy from their Etsy Shop or take a look at where Hearth and Hammer candles are sold (The Strand!!) and see if you can find them in a local store near you!

I had been wanting to try candle making for a loooong time and finally gathered up the necessary materials to do it! I’ve been experimenting and practicing and literally JUST launched my own Etsy store called Novelly Yours! (And it’s LIVE!)  I’ve had a blast brainstorming ideas for scents and themes so far and I’m currently working out all of the little details to make each candle perfect. Check out the store for candles inspired by The Raven Cycle, Fangirl, The Grisha Trilogy, Anna and the French Kiss, and more!

Which of these shops would you recommend? Have you purchased from any before? Any more excellent candle shops you’d like to give a shout out to?
