Freaky Friday #3: June 8, 2012

It’s Friday again! Phew, the week is finally (almost) over! So it’s only my third Freaky Friday weekly feature and already I’m struggling with which character I want to feature in these posts. Bad sign? Maybe. Laziness? More likely. It’s actually a lot more work than I thought to put myself in their shoes! I never had to think about it in terms of what I would do in their place. BUT I really do enjoy it because it helps me analyze the characters in ways I didn’t even think of as I was reading the book. So I put on my blogging hat, thought about my favorite books, and came up with this week’s feature:

In this week’s Freaky Friday, I will be switching places with LENA (HALOWAY) TIDDLE from DELIRIUM/PANDEMONIUM

I’ll just use Delirium since Pandemonium may cause a lot of spoilers!

In Case You Forgot… Lena lives in a future-America where the world believes that love is a disease – People act crazy because of love and do dangerous and life-altering things – So scientists have come up with a cure that is administered to all 18-year-olds to prevent them from capabilities of feeling love. Although nervous about her procedure, Lena keeps her head down in society and awaits the day when she has her cure and will fit in with the rest of her world. She’s haunted by the memory of her mother – for whom the cure didn’t work – and is constantly plagued with the story of her suicide for love. Everything gets turned upside down with Lena meets Alex, a 19-year-old hiding inside society as a Cured, but never did have the procedure. When they get to know each other more, Lena starts to feel that love might not be a bad idea. In fact, it’s something worth fighting for.

So I Wake Up In… Portland, Maine. Oooh I’ve never been to Maine, but I am very interested in going! Except this is the Maine of the future and now I’m in a world that doesn’t tolerate love in any way, shape, or form. So now what? I love my family, I love my boyfriend, I love my friends. I already know what love is like and love is a wonderful thing! Things are about to get weird…

Yep, that’s how I pictured the rocky beaches of Portland!

Family Life… Living with Lena’s aunt, uncle, and cousins might not be so bad. I just think it’d be really stiff since it would seem so emotionless to me. In fact, I’d feel really odd living in a whole world where emotions as strong as love are not only frowned upon, but punishable. Oh cripes, this does not look good for me. I’d probaby get thrown in the crypts right off the bat; although I guess since I’d be a stranger in the town, I wouldn’t really have anyone there to love. Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad afterall…

So Then it Gets Complicated… Let’s start with Lena’s friendship with Hana – I really liked the way their friendship kind of fell together. They didn’t seem to have much in common at all and yet their friendship was perfectly natural. I could use a good friend like Hana in that situation, but the question (as it was for Lena) is even though you trust her, how much can you really tell her? Best friends understand you better than a lot of people – They’re the ones you tell your secrets to. But how big of a secret is too big to tell? Lena struggles with that throughout the book when she starts her relationship with Alex and I can definitely relate to that idea in many ways! Which brings us to…
Alex. I loved Lena and Alex. Man, I almost think I need to put this on my reread list because I’m already starting to forget half the details from the book 🙁 I’ve never been good at retaining what I read. Anyway… So here’s this relationship with Alex. It really starts to grow on Lena. Now it’s a hidden relationship from, well, everyone. Give me love or give me death! And we begin the entire plot of the book – But more on this… Right now!

Just a Crush… Alex! I lovedddd his character and the way he pursued Lena. It just seemed like they were supposed to be together! I loved Alex’s little wild side (I guess we do find out more about the Wilds later!) and his quiet defiance against the ever-non-loving society. It gives the book a nice edge and sometimes I just really love rooting for the rebellion! I would totally be Alex’s partner in crime – Plus it helps that he’s good in a jam, can think and act quickly, and he’s definitely Lena’s knight in shining armor. What more could you ask for? Some pretty great traits in my opinion! Sometimes I can’t place it exactly (and this was one of the times) where I just love the romance and I develop a little book-crush!

“Everyone is asleep. They’ve all been asleep for years. You seemed … awake.’ Alex is whispering now. He closes his eyes, opens them again.’I’m tired of sleeping.”

“And I love you too.” His fingers skate the edge of my jaw, dance briefly over my lips. “You should know that. You have to know that.”

“Love, the deadliest of all deadly things: it kills you both when you have it and when you don’t.”

Yeahhh, buddy! Words like that really just get me! They developed such a passion for each other, and I really felt like it was real. Not rushed, not forced. In spite of anything and everything that happened, Alex just wanted Lena to be loved and to be happy – real happy, not the fake, emotionless kind.

Welcome to My Life… Not terribly exciting, but Lena would be able to know real love! I don’t know how she’d cope without Alex or without a friend to lean on, but I think she’s pretty strong, even if she is quiet. But Lena would be able to feel the love from my family and my friends. Maybe she’d even want to stay. She’d never have to run from love or hide it again!

Freaky Friday #2: June 1, 2012

Welcome back to Freaky Friday!! Last week I switched myself with the Hunger Games heroine Katniss Everdeen. Since that was kind of a heavy topic, I figured I’d go a little bit lighter this week with one of my favorite characters from one of my favorites series…

In this week’s Freaky Friday, I will be switching places with HERMIONE GRANGER from THE HARRY POTTER SERIES

In Case You Forgot… Hermione Granger, best friend of Harry Potter (the boy who lived!) – Intelligent, kind, sometimes smarty pants, brave, always has a plan. Harry saved her from a troll and the rest was history. Come on, we all know Harry Potter. Do I really have to tell you the whole story?

So I Wake Up In… Hogwarts! One can only hope, since that’s where most of the story takes place. Ahhh, a dream to be in Hogwarts! So now I get a feel of what it feels like to have magic in my blood. Poor girl, I’d probably mess up her reputation since I’ve never done magic before. But if I still had her skills, this is where we’re similar – I’d totally be proud of being bright and studious and a little bit of a smartass – “It’s le-vi-o-sa. Not le-vi-o-SA!” Take that, you slackers! Hey, hanging out in the library? Sounds like my kind of deal. And bummin’ around Hogwarts with Harry and Ron sounds like a stellar plan. Mischief managed!

Wingardium Leviosa!

Family Life… Well, the only similarities that our families have in common is that my parents are Muggles too. They’re not dentists. They’re not British. And I’m not an only child. But seeing as Hermione doesn’t see much of her family throughout the series, doesn’t seem like a huge deal! To Hermione, her family is her friends, and I’m with her on that one.

So Then it Gets Complicated… First off, I’d be fumbling with magic this whole time. Most likely lighting people’s eyebrows on fire, levitating things and bouncing them off walls, blowing things up, and never mind transfiguration or apparating! That would end in disaster for sure. I’d be a pod-Hermione and people would definitely wonder where the real one went! I think I’d be able to take on her demeanor well, but definitely not the skills (although I’d be very willing to learn and practice!!!) – But I think a wand in my hand would definitely start out dangerous. So then there’s the fact of Voldemort (Oh yeah, the whole reason the series is taking place). I simply would not have the bravery to deal with that! Granted, I stand behind my friends and I’d be behind Harry and Ron 100%… But I’d have to stand behind them, literally – Shield me, you real wizards! Slow and poor magic does not a good witch make. Put me in Ravenclaw because I do not have the Gryffindor bravery necessary to fight these battles!

Just a Crush… Oh, Ron Weasley… I love the Ron-Hermione relationship that spans throughout the series. First they hate each other, then they’re friends, and I love the uncomfortable yet completely logical progression from friends to more than that. They go through a lot together and I’d definitely love hanging out with Ron – His humor is bottomless and actually Ron is my favorite character out of the whole series. I love the banter back and forth that he and Hermione have and their relationship although laborious to begin with develops effortlessly.

Hermione: “He seems like a very good teacher. But I wish I could have had a turn with the boggart –“

Ron: “What would it have been for you? A piece of homework that only got nine out of ten?”

I probably would have handled the Krum/Ron situation the same way as well as the Ron/Lavender situation. Even though Hermione’s got brains beyond belief, she’s still a girl and don’t we all get emotional when it comes to boys!

Welcome to My Life… Hmm, Muggle life is pretty boring! But at least Hermione has plenty of knowledge in Muggle Studies so she’d be able to manage without her magic. She’s extremely bright so she’d be able to figure out how things work and she does go back to the Muggle world when she’s with her parents since they’re of the non-magic persuasion. Then there’s the fact that she’s well-versed in Polyjuice Potion and magic is a normal in her world, so if she happened to Freaky Friday switch with me, I think she’d be able to handle it quite well! Much better than I would… She’s used to adapting to situations where she has to put herself in someone else’s shoes, having to hide undercover when the hunt is on for Harry and she’d probably be the one figure out how to switch us back!

Freaky Friday #1: May 25, 2012

Happy Friday all my reading friends! It’s almost time for a long holiday weekend 🙂

As some of you may have read, I’ve been trying to jazz up the blog a bit to get out of a routine of strictly reviews. I started up with Top Ten Tuesday this past week, which I look forward to participating in each Tuesday, but I also wanted to establish something new – my own weekly feature. So I did some thinking and I came up with… Ta-da!

So Freaky Friday is going to be my new weekly feature. To my knowledge, no one is currently running this on their blog, so I’m excited to be starting something completely new. Okay, so here’s the deal on how it’s going to work: Like the movie (and remake), I’m going to “Freaky Friday” myself and put myself in the shoes of a character from one of my favorite books (and put them in my world, which is probably much less exciting). I’ll go through the basic plot of the story as well as relationships and critical moments our hero/heroine has to deal with. So without further ado…

In this week’s Freaky Friday, I will be switching places with KATNISS EVERDEEN from THE HUNGER GAMES

In Case You Forgot… Katniss and her family live in a dystopia North America now called Panem, a nation dominated and strictly ruled by the Big Brother – the Capitol.  Each year, 24 children/teens (a boy and girl from each district) are required to participate in the Hunger Games – a fight to the death where only one survives, and a reminder that the Capitol is in full control, a warning against rebellion. When Katniss’s younger sister Prim is selected against the odds, Katniss volunteers to take her place in the fight to survive the Hunger Games.

So I Wake Up In… District 12 in Panem. I’m assuming this is somewhere in the eastern part of the US (maybe West Virginia-ish) with all the coal mines. I’d probably be terrible at providing for the whole family like Katniss does. I love being the woods and I have actually had some experience with a bow and arrow… But it’s just recreational and well, I’m still not very good. I can hit a target, but shooting at cans isn’t as easy as it seems! I’ve also never hunted before, so I don’t think I’d want to kill animals (this doesn’t look good for me in the Hunger Games…), and that’s also really tricky to do.

Map of Panem – I like this version

Family Life… I’d have a soft spot for Prim, just like Katniss. I know she wouldn’t be my real sister, but I do have an older sister that I’d do anything for, so I’d do my best to do right by Prim. I think I’d have a hard time with her mom since I go to my mom for everything. She’d be the one I look to for comfort, and I don’t think I’d find it there.

So Then it Gets Complicated… Now I have to go into the Hunger Games. What!? I’m sure everyone would be like, “What the hell is wrong with Katniss?” because I’d just be crying non-stop. Maybe Cinna could calm me down and Haymitch could get something going with some kind of training (what in the world would I use as an advantage?), but I’d probably just end up getting sloshed with Haymitch instead. As for being in the actual games, let’s just say I wouldn’t be the winner…… Maybe I’d still have Katniss’s speed/agility/physical abilities, but I don’t think I’d be able to beat out 23 other kids, especially against the tributes. I could fare well in the wooded-type area that made up the arena, but camping skills only takes you so far in a situation like that!

Just a Crush… Sorry, Peeta-lovers, I think I’m on Team Gale on this one! I know after being selected for the games, Katniss didn’t get much time with Gale, but that would be the person I would choose above all others for support for the games. He’s her best friend and you know there’s a little more than friendship there. He would have been the one to learn all the skills from and you know he’s always got your back. Plus, Katniss’s family would then have to rely on him. I know our hearts go out to Peeta because we find out about his real affections for Katniss, but I just never saw the two of them together. She starts by faking her love for Peeta, and I just don’t see a real relationship starting like that (even though they did build a real trust in the end). If I came back from the games, I’d go right back to Gale! He’s Katniss’s real support system and I really wanted that to develop into a full-on relationship!

Welcome to My Life…Welcome to Illinois, part of future District 10 (probably) which is the Livestock district. Let’s see… Katniss in my life. I guess she’d have it easy! An apartment stocked with food, a car to use, places to go thataren’tfalling apart, and freedom from the Capitol – Probably a dream come true! I’d probably get fired if she went to work in my place because it’s a lot of customer service, not to mention she probably wouldn’t know how to do a lot of stuff in my world which in her life would be time traveling into the past! I’d probably recommend just laying low in my apartment and watching TV or reading some of the tons of books I have there!

Well, that’ll wrap it up for Freaky Friday! I hope it’ll be an enjoyable segment each week, and I’ll try to mix it up a lot with the types of books I choose, and maybe not always main characters so I can put myself in a variety of situations. I hope it was fun for you to read, and I had fun doing it. As of right now, that’s all that counts. Happy weekend, everyone!
