WINTER Release Day | Lunar Chronicles Fun & Games

winterishere

After what probably feels like a very long wait, WINTER is finally here and I couldn’t be more excited! And maybe a little bit nervous to see how it all ends!! As you probably know, I’ve been celebrating the entire series with the Lunar Chronicles (Re)Read along that kicked off back in August. WINTER is the last leg of the read along so if you’d like to join in the discussion via Twitter/Instagram hashtag, check it out at #TLCReadAlong. The read along is totally chill and is basically just a way for all of us to chat together (no spoilers, please). Hope to see you there!

I had devised a few fun posts and games for the Lunar Chronicles (Re)Read along but encourage anyone to pick one up, share, or post if they so desire! There’s no limit to this love and these posts are for all you Lunartics out there! Join in the fun with any one of the activities below!

  • The Lunar Chronicles Book Tag
  • Lunar Chronicles MASH (see my post below!)
  • Kiss, Marry, Kill (Kai, Wolf, Thorne)
  • Lunar Chronicles Scattergories (Pick any letter and associate it with things in the book — see my post below!)
  • Personality Quiz: Which Lunar Chronicles Character Are You? (See below — Updated for Winter’s release! If you’ve taken it before, you may get a different result so come on over and take it again!)
  • Lunar Chronicles-themed Pinterest Boards

Today I’m sharing some of my turns with these games so feel free to leave a comment and let me know your results, create your own post, or share somewhere on social media! It should be lots of fun!

LUNAR CHRONICLES MASH

Lunar Chronicles MASH

If you’re not familiar with MASH or if you’ve forgotten how to play, all you do is pick a number (any number you want) and count off each item on the list according to your number. (For example, if you pick two, you count Winter as 1, Scarlet as 2 and Scarlet gets crossed off. Cress as 1, Winter as 2 so Winter gets crossed off, and so on). Higher numbers are usually more fun because you don’t really know where you’ll end up! Once there’s only one option left in any given category, circle that option and you do not continue to count it as you cross things off.
I’m choosing SEVEN and here are my results!

TLC MASH results
My Lunar Chronicles MASH card reveals that I would:

  • Marry Thorne
  • Be BFFs with Cinder
  • Have a job as a Thaumaturge
  • Live on Luna
  • Have the ability to glamour
  • Drive a hover

I SWEAR I did not rig it so I would end up with Thorne!!! It’s just meant to be ;D

 LUNAR CHRONICLES SCATTERGORIES

Scattergories was one of my favorite games back in the day! To adapt to play here, I’m modifying the directions just a teensy bit to make it easier to play. (This was actually kind of hard when I tried it…) Here’s what you do!

  • Choose any letter of the alphabet (in the original game you roll a die which dictates it for you — since we WANT to have answers and it’s not a competition, feel free to choose your own!).
  • Answer the following list using words or names ONLY beginning with the letter of your choice. You can get a little creative if you need to/want to!
  • I’m going with fewer categories instead of a whole bunch because this turned out to be trickier than I thought! So instead of just one per category, think of as many as you can for each one!
  1. A Character’s Name:
  2. A place in the book:
  3. A piece of technology or scientific data:
  4. Occupation/Character role:

I’m choosing the letter C for mine (so if you want to use C for yours too, look away until after you do yours to challenge yourself to really come up with as many as you can without seeing mine first)!

  1. A Character’s Name: Cinder, Cress, Captain Carswell Thorne, Channary
  2. A place in the book: Commonwealth… Hmmm. I’m blanking. That’s all I got!
  3. A piece of technology or scientific data: Chip, cyborg, comm, cybernetic technology
  4. Occupation/Character role: Cage fighter, captive, captain, cyborg

Whew that was harder than I thought! But still fun to test my brain and see what I could come up with. I bet S and L would be great letters to use too!

WHICH LUNAR CHRONICLES CHARACTER ARE YOU?

I’ve revamped the original Lunar Chronicles personality quiz that I made for the upcoming release of WINTER! It includes more characters, better results, and you may get a different result if you take it again! If this is your first time hearing about the quiz, take it below — and let me know which result you got!!

So tell me — what were your results on the games? Which Lunar Chronicles character are you? And most importantly, how excited are you for WINTER!?!? Happy reading, friends!

More Lunar Chronicles fun!

The Lunar Chronicles (Re)Read Along | WINTER

lunar chronicles read along

WINTER IS HERE!!!!

We kicked off the read along with CINDER in August and zipped through SCARLET in September (see the intro & CINDER post here!) and had a blast reading CRESS in October and now… WINTER IS HERE!!!!!!!! I’m sure we’re all diving into WINTER as soon as it hits our doorstep so if you plan on reading it as soon as it comes out or any time throughout November, we’d love to have you join in the very last leg of the #TLCReadAlong and read the book with us!

If this is the first you’re looking into the read along, it’s incredibly simple and totally relaxed! We’re really just reading the books together to have a great time discussing together and do all of these fun posts as well. WINTER is the last leg of the read along and whether you’ve been here from the beginning or are just joining in now, it’s not to late to join in the fun! There’s a lot of fun ideas and extra posts during the WINTER leg and even if you’re not a part of the read along, I’d love to see what you come up with!

Since WINTER is probably one of your most anticipated releases, I’m guessing if you’re joining the read along and you’ve read this far, you’re probably not too concerned about a schedule. Most likely (for me too), it’ll be “savor the book while still reading as fast as you can” and since the book is legit 800+ pages, let’s just say instead of a schedule, just take your time to read WINTER throughout the month of November. (I know when I read QUEEN OF SHADOWS the other month, it took me about two weeks to read 650+ pages so I think readers can sort of pace themselves on this one!)

The schedule is more of a guideline really anyway for those who like to stay on a specific timeline so feel free to start or finish any time during the month of November! The read along is always about reading the books, discussing, and enjoying more than a schedule. I’m just happy you’re here and reading along with us!

BONUS POSTS | These posts are designed to be fun & easy! Choose one or all to post any time during the WINTER read along! (If you need to include any spoilers in these posts, please mark clearly!)
Even if you’re not officially joining the read along and you’re interested in one of these fun post ideas, I’d love to see your Lunar Chronicles-themed posts so just  make sure to tag me or use the #TLCReadAlong hashtag when posting and I’ll be sure to share!

  • Lunar Chronicles Book Tag (questions posted in October for the CRESS leg but there’s no limit on when this can be posted (I’d love for it to cycle forever!))
  • Scattergories (participants choose a letter as their “theme” to pair up things from the book)
  • Lunar Chronicles-themed Pinterest board/fan art/memes (You can check out my Pinterest board here! The Lunar Chronicles)
  • Favorite couple of the series
  • Favorite fairy tale adaptation of the series
  • The Lunar Chronicles MASH | Create your own or use the pre-created game below to play! Post your results on Twitter/Instagram with #TLCmash to share or enter it into to your own blog post! (If you have a blog and/or Tumblr, that could be the ideal place to share graphic + text!)
  • Series Read Alikes (now that we’ve finished, what to read next)
  • Snow White parallels within the book

The Lunar Chronicles (Re)Read Along | Sign-Ups + Cinder!

lunar chronicles read along

Did you love The Lunar Chronicles and want to re-read the series before WINTER comes out in November? Have you been meaning to start the series and are ready now that all the books will be out? Then now’s the perfect time for you to join THE LUNAR CHRONICLES (RE)READ ALONG!

Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series is one of my all-time favorites and I knew I wanted to experience them all again to refresh my memory before the final book, WINTER, comes out this fall! I got the idea to host a read along for those who wanted to re-read and for those who have been holding out for WINTER before they started and it’s finally time to share this read along with all you book-lovers out there! (You have no idea how hard it was to hold onto this idea until it was finally time to share!)

I’m SO excited to be hosting this four-month long event with some help from the wonderful folks at Macmillan & Fierce Reads! They were kind enough to totally jump on board when I asked them if they wanted to be a part of the read along too and it wouldn’t be as fabulous as it’s shaping up to be without them!

Ready to get reading? Check out the details of the read along below!

WHEN

The read along will span from August 1 – December 7, 2015. Readers will be allotted four weeks to read each book. Here is the schedule for each book:

  • CINDER: August 1 – August 31
  • SCARLET: September 1 – September 30
  • CRESS: October 1 – October 31
  • WINTER: November 10 – December 7

NOTE: Since FAIREST is such a short read, it will not be officially included in the read along (it’s way too quick to dedicate a whole month to it)! If you want to read FAIREST too, the downtime between CRESS & WINTER might be a great time to squeeze it in!

HOW

  • Readers will have four weeks to read each book (though the entire month will be allotted).
  • At the end of each month, readers will be encouraged to write either a review of the book or some sort of recap post.
  • Readers are also encouraged to share updates (NON-SPOILERY) on social media using the hashtag #TLCReadAlong! At the end of each month, one person using the hashtag will be randomly selected to win a TLC-related prize! Contest is open to US participants only. Sorry! But we hope that regardless of country, you’ll join us in reading!
  • There will also be opportunities for fun Lunar Chronicles posts related to each book — think less book report questions, more fun & games!

WHO

ANYONE is invited to join in! Whether you’re re-reading the series in full, starting for the first time, or jumping in later on, we welcome you with open arms! If you’ve already read CINDER and want to wait to jump in at SCARLET (for example), or just want to wait until WINTER comes out and read along with us then, you’re welcome to hop in the read along at any time!
You may see many bloggers here but you do NOT have to be a blogger to join! This is literally a read along for ANYONE who wants to read the series. I’m just excited to experience the series with new readers and those who already love it and want to re-read. All readers welcome!

I had a blast on the Gayle Forman read along and I know it was long but thanks for sticking with me! Re-reading Gayle’s books was something I really needed to do and I was so happy to read them with others who wanted to experience them again and people reading them for the first time! ANSWERS: WEEK 4

  1. How do you feel about the travel aspect and sense of worldliness in Willem’s life versus Allyson’s own travels and personal adventures? How do you think travel affects their lives differently? What does travel mean to you?
Oh wow, hmmmm. I think for Willem, travel had become a norm in his life, but he seemed to be using it as an escape away from his problems. For Allyson, I think it was adventure. Trying something new. Reinventing herself and really figuring out who she was outside of her normal life and her normal setting. When we first met Willem, travel was his escape but then it sort of meshed with Allyson’s path and it took on a new meaning for him in his quest to find her again. As for me? Travel is definitely adventure. It’s experiencing something new, finding a new place, learning new things. Travel is enjoying nature’s beauty in places and ways that I haven’t been able to experience it before. Meeting new people and growing closer to my travel companions (now usually Shane).
  2. Another big symbol in the book was Allyson’s watch. We know it meant something specific for Allyson. What do you think it meant for Willem?
For Allyson, the watch was sort of her connection to her old self. She was always concerned with time and when she left her watch with Willem, he was her time keeper. She lost it and was able to let loose. I think for Willem, it was sort of the same thing. He was wandering for so long that when he met Allyson, he started to become grounded again. It’s also his one connection to Allyson and a constant in his life. It’s sort of like his burning torch.
  3. Both Willem and Allyson grew because of what they found in each other. Is there a person in your life who has helped you grow? Who helped you bring out the person you wanted to be?
My fiancé Shane has definitely changed who I am by bringing out the better qualities in me. Before I met him, I was still fairly immature and not really making smart decisions with my life (not bad, but not great) and I just feel so much more grounded and responsible and secure with myself. He definitely helped me change for the better and ever since that point, I have been so much happier.
  4. Who caught the Adam Wilde reference!?
YES! I love that Gayle does that. There was a Clod reference (the band from Sisters in Sanity) in If I Stay that was so awesome to find and I love the Adam Wilde reference in Just One Year. Pretty sneaky!
  5. How did you feel about the ending? There have been quite a few reactions! What did you think?
Welp. It was surprising. I was kind of disappointed because I was SO hoping for a little bit more of a reunion between Willem and Allyson. I had such a connection with Allyson in Just One Day that I just wanted to see more of her and her reaction to Willem (where we left her in Just One Day). I think I’ve made my peace with it now, but I was actually kind of outraged at first and didn’t know what to think.

GIVEAWAY WINNER!

A HUGE thank you to Michelle from Unraveling Books for tweeting throughout the Just One Year read along! I know she had troubles with it at times but she was a total rock star with tweeting quotes and feelings as well as following along with the read along questions each week. Congrats on being the winner of the giveaway! You totally earned it, girl! Let me know if you want some official Gayle Forman merch from this shop or if you’d like one of her books! 😀

ANSWERS: WEEK 3

  1. How did you feel about Willem’s time in India? Besides his mother, what do you think he found from his time there?
I feel like he got a lot of “Willem” time. Yes, he’s been travelling this whole time but I feel like it wasn’t until India that he finally started really taking time to figure out who he is and what he wants to do with his life now that’s it’s changed so drastically. I also feel like actually being with his mother and yet again coming up with conflicts between the two of them really forced them to work on their relationship. It was an immediate concern and one that Willem couldn’t run from anymore. On a different side of the same note, Willem finally got to see a good side to his mother. It’s so easy to see the hard times and the bad situations, but Willem go to see his mother at work and understand more now that he’s an adult himself how hard things can be. He was able to step outside of himself to see things from her perspective which is something he wasn’t able to do before.
  2. Prateek told Willem, “To dream is the ultimate dare.” What do you think he means by that?
Prateek has pretty big dreams in store for himself and dreaming is the first step to making those big things in your life happen. If you never dream it, you cannot do it. Simple as that. I also think that in Willem’s case, he’s been holding himself back too much. He has dreams at times but won’t allow himself to follow through with them. Instead, he’s been running away from a lot of his problems or even the good things but ones that scare him. Prateek sort of prods him and pushes him to really take risks and put himself out there.
  3. Do you have hopes for Willem and his mother? Do you think they’ve mended their relationship?
I think they still have a long way to go in mending what has been damaged throughout Willem’s life, but they’re definitely on the right track. They’ve taken a really big first step into regrowing their relationship and I really loved seeing the two of them finally make a connection instead of missing them all the time!
  4. We finally find out how Bram died. How do you think that affected Willem’s theory of fate and accidents?
Well it certainly wasn’t a happy accident, but an unfortunate turn in chance nonetheless. I think Willem put a lot of faith in Fate and in chance and the odds of Bram’s death actually occurring were so miniscule and yet it happened. Growing up with one notion and then his father’s death totally fracturing that idea… I think it’s really shook up Willem and he wasn’t sure if his life philosophy was a good one anymore.
  5. Why do you think that just one day with Allyson awoke so many feelings in Willem?
I’m not actually sure why she was the catalyst… I think as different as I thought the two of them were in Just One Day, I really see similarities in Just One Year once we get to know Willem. Willem helped Allyson be more bold, take more chances, and really grow as a person. I almost feel like he saw what he brought out in Allyson but was still stuck himself. Along with a romance, he really made a connection with her and saw a happy accident in the crossing of their paths. I actually don’t know if he knew it or not — maybe subconsciously, maybe I’m making it up — but I feel like his character needed to find her again to make things right. Things were not finished, they did not have an ending or a goodbye and the open ending really affected Allyson. It damaged her entire view of the trip, of Willem, and even back on herself. I like to think that Willem needed to make things right with Allyson again not only for his sake, but for hers.

QUESTIONS: WEEK 4

  1. How do you feel about the travel aspect and sense of worldliness in Willem’s life versus Allyson’s own travels and personal adventures? How do you think travel affects their lives differently?
What does travel mean to you?

  3. Both Willem and Allyson grew because of what they found in each other. Is there a person in your life who has helped you grow? Who helped you bring out the person you wanted to be?
