Anderson’s Bookshop hosted five amazing authors on Thursday, August 30th for their “Five Good Reasons to Read” event. Here’s a little recap for you!

We started promptly at 7pm with a very packed house! Fortunately I was able to get a seat (only because I went solo, not because I was super early!) and was able to get a good view of the authors as we got to hear some scheduled Q&A about their featured works.

With five authors, it took a long time to get through questions, but I always love hearing the answers! Then the audience got to ask a few questions (as many as time permitted) and the people selected were given some neat goodie bags filled with swag, a book, and an ARC (all unnamed). Sadly, I was not chosen to voice a question, but I guess the upside is that someone else asked what I wanted to, which was “Where were you when you first got the idea for your book?” and here are the answers:

Susan Dennard: a dream – her brother was kidnapped and the only people to help her was a rag-tag team
Leigh Bardugo: a cabin in the woods where it was “country dark, not city dark” and in the pitch black she thought she heard a creature/someone else breathing (the inception of The Fold)
Dan Krokos: a sci-fi website where he read about fear & a sort of animal-alarm pheromones (hence Miranda’s power)
Erica O’Roarke: in the shower – She was wondering what would have happened in Ron Weasley had to be our hero instead of Harry Potter and how a non-leader (or weaker fighter) would handle it (hence her main character’s personality)
Veronica Roth: on I-94 in Minnesota, listening to a bad Evanescence song, thinking about someone jumping off rooftops but not in a suicidal way

Anyway, I just thought those answers were cool. I always love hearing where the original idea came from! Lots of laughs from Leigh (again – she’s just a joy to see!) and Dan seems like quite the comedian as well. Great to see Veronica Roth and I loved to hear a little bit more about Divergent/Insurgent.

Then it was time for the signing, so I patiently waited my turn (by reading to pass the time, of course) and got my books signed and collected a little swag!

Swag

Awesome! I am sooo jealous! I am hoping to make it to an author event that will be in Charleston, SC. If I do get to, it will be my very first one. I am just nervous about going to Charleston since I am unfamiliar with it. Thinking about bringing my cousin, too 🙂

Ohhh what’s the event?? That would be fun! They’re always (I say always like I’m a pro.. I’ve only been to two haha) so much fun! I think you should definitely go! How far away is Charleston from you? Bring your cousin! It would be nice to share it with someone.. I don’t have anyone who lives close anymore who even cares about books lol

It’s called the Y’all Fest (it is the south) and there are going to be so may authors there, including Holly Black, Cassandra Clare, Stephanie Perkins, Alyson Noel and a TON of others! Its about 3ish hours, depending on your driving 🙂 I want to be able to make so so badly!

Yes, exactly, everything is in NYC, or just outside the city. NYC is 4.5 hours a way, not to mention it is never easy to get there, and certainly expensive. But it sounds like you had a great time at the event at Anderson’s Bookshop. Thanks for listen to me whine.

        Hey, anytime 🙂
Yeah, I’m sure it’s a total pain! I don’t live terribly far from the actual city of Chicago but I hate going there. Traffic, expensive, crowded… I’m sure you know! 🙂
