Top Ten Tuesday – February 5, 2013: Top Ten Best Bookish Memories

It’s Top Ten Tuesday, hosted by the wonderful blog at The Broke and the Bookish!

This Week’s Topic is: Top Ten Best Bookish Memories

TOP TEN NINE BOOKISH MEMORIES
(I made it all the way to nine and then… nothin. So NINE it is!)

205-1

One of my first memories (although hazy) dates back to Kindergarten. I don’t remember exactly why (maybe to do a story about the Kindergarten’s reading program?) but the local paper came in to take pictures of the kids in my class reading books. My teacher gave me a copy of Disney’s Cinderella to read while they were taking pictures and she told all the kids just to pretend to read even if they couldn’t (I mean, we were five). But I actually knew how to read, and pretty well. I actually finished the whole book. I remember reading the last two pages over and over so I would still look like I was reading because I didn’t know what else to do!

205-2

I remember getting up early the day I went to go buy Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, coming home, and sitting/laying on the couch ALL DAY reading HP from start to finish. I spent that entire summer day in August holed up in my house reading it from cover to cover. What a magical day it was (no pun intended).

205-3

The Fierce Reads tour came through Naperville, IL back in June of 2012 and I had only been blogging for two months at the time. I barely knew what I was doing, but I heard about the author signing and appearance. I knew I had to go! I didn’t know anyone and was too shy to even tell other bloggers that I had a book blog too because, well… It was only two months old! It was such a fun experience and the authors were SO nice. It definitely got me interested in keeping up with author appearances near me! (You can view my recap of that event here)

205-4

My friend from high school and college roommate Alison had started the Twilight Saga before me and suggested I pick it up. Hello, world! After we both became obsessed with the books, we made our other roommate Leslie start reading them (although her sister/our fourth roommate refused to try them… not her thing!) and then we all spent time talking about the books! It was especially fun when Leslie was catching up on books that we had already read and she would come up to us and be like, “I can’t believe this just happened!” and then discussions abound ensued! We all went to go see the first movie at midnight when it first came out and I’ve seen all of the movies with at least one or both of them when they were released. It’s been such a fun way to bond with them and I love that books brought us closer!

205-5

“Snowmageddon” happened almost EXACTLY two years ago to the day (It was February 2nd, actually in 2011) and everyone in my area got snowed in….

Since I couldn’t go anywhere, I made hot chocolate and started reading a book I had just bought from the used bookstore…. The first of the Stephanie Plum series, One For the Money. And so it began that I was a Stephanie Plum fan!

205-6

Not so much of a memory… More of a constant support system nowadays haha. I think it started with Friends quotes and grew to discussions and now it’s all day texts every day. Alyssa and Kristina and I talk about anything and everything under the sun, including Johnny Depp vs Brad Pitt, chupacabras/Bigfoots/aliens, and of course, ranting and raving about books!

205-7

I remember when I read If I Stay…. Then Where She Went…. Then Just One Day. Each one was a new emotional journey that I went on and each book has stuck with me ever since I finished. The beauty of Gayle Forman’s writing is amazing and the anticipation of starting a new book from her has never let me down! It’s so much fun to look back on how I felt each time I read one of her books!

205-8

Jamie from The Perpetual Page Turner and Epic Reads put together an AH-mazing giveaway that somehow I WON. I immediately flipped out and could barely contain my excitement. Even better was the day that box ARRIVED! <3 Thanks again to all the ladies who put that giveaway together! I’m still working my way through all the amazing books!

Okay, this isn’t a specific memory either, but whenever someone likes one of my recommendations, it just makes me SOOO happy! I love hearing when someone comes back and says they loved a book that I recommended! It’s such a great feeling 🙂

I only came up with nine things… Close enough! I can’t wait to read everyone else’s favorite bookish memories!

Yay for your list! So cute and these are some great bookish memories. I especially love your first one about the Cinderella book! I had a similar experience in maybe 1st or 2nd grade? One of my classmates wanted to check out books from the higher reading level section (at the time we were only allowed to pick from the lower level section), so to test her the librarian picked out a book and asked her to read some of it. She couldn’t, but I happened to lean over and started reading everything perfectly. So I got to move up and she didn’t! Should have included that on my own list!

Also, I’m super jealous that I’m not in on the texting fun with you, Alyssa and Kiki! 😉

First off, I love that stack of books from The Perpetual Page Turner! That’s awesome. Lucky you!
Second…I need a Snowmageddon right about now so I can put away the school books and read some novels. Those bonus days off are always the best!

  3. Mary @ My Sisters Bookshelf

Oooh Snowmaggedon is a good one! I have one sort of like that except it involved tea and living with three male roommates. I feel the spirit was probably the same though! Great list! And it really is the best when people like your recommendations, isn’t it?!

what a great list. I especially love anything that we remember from childhood. I, too, tried to get my friend Bess to read twilight. she liked it, but not like me. her husband actually picked it up and loved it. 🙂

  5. Rachel

Awww, I love your Cinderella memory. I can just picture you (ok, I’m just picturing a random little girl, but whatever) reading it and making it look you were still reading after you finish. Oh! And I totally love that you bonded over the Twilight series because that was so my thing in highschool and I did the same thing with my friends.

  6. Elizabeth @ Don't Take My Books Away

Bookish friends definitely make reading much more fun… I’m so glad I discovered blogging or else I’d be missing out! And your Cinderella story is so cute! Rereading the last two pages over and over just so you looked like you were pretending to read– haha!

  7. Jamie

YAY SO LOVE THAT MY GIVEAWAY MADE YOUR LIST!!! 🙂

Umm but first signings are always such a great memory! It opens your eyes up to this whole new world! Yours was a pretty epic one! My first one was a very small festival of YA authors which was SO cool for a first one!

  8. Lauren @ Lose Time Reading

HOLY SNOW! Reading during a snow storm is my favorite time to read… I love love love the snow 😛 That was an amazing giveaway you won ! All your memories are awesome, I had so much fun reading them. This was probably the funniest TTT !
