The Book Addict’s Guide’s Four Year Blogoversary!

book addict's guide blogoversaryIt’s my four year blogoversary!

I can’t believe that FOUR years have already gone by since I decided to start a blog dedicated to books and book-related things! I still remember way back in the day when I decided to start a book blog. I don’t even remember why I decided to blog since I didn’t know anyone who did but I felt like I needed an outlet that was more than just Goodreads reviews. My main goal was to review books to help people find some really good reads out there and four years later, that’s still my number one priority! From reviews to recommendation posts to random bookish fun, I always love sharing thoughts and recommending my favorite reads (and a little bit of everything else bookish in between)!

I think the most interesting thing to reflect on is how much book blogging has truly impacted my life inside and outside of the book world. I’ve found some incredibly amazing books and series that have brought new perspectives on things, shocked me with their creativity, or were just plain fun to read. I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to attend book events like BEA and ALA and to attend book events throughout Chicagoland and meet so many amazing authors. I’m forever thankful for publishers, authors, friends, and blog readers alike for their constant support and opportunities to allow me to grow through my blog and be a part of things I didn’t even know would be dreams of mine when I first started my own little corner of the internet.

The biggest impact this blog has made on my life is in my real life friendships. I never thought I would meet friends over the internet (it’s what your parents always warn you about!) but these people who started out as strangers and liked the same books I did turned into life-long friends and incredibly important parts of my life. I’m sure you see the posts and events that I co-host with my friends but our friendship extends so much further beyond blog posts and Twitter chats and I’m forever grateful that I have found these people who enrich my life so much further beyond just books. They have been a shoulder to cry on, bridesmaids in my wedding, travel companions, people I cross the country for, and advice gurus. I had no idea I would find soul friends as well as so many other close friends through this community and that’s been the best surprise of all!

No matter how well we know each other or whether our relationship is personal or professional, I want each reader of this post to know that I couldn’t have had such success with this blog without you! I truly value each and every reader, every comment, every Tweet and Instagram like, and everything in between. I’ve come to love this blog so fiercely. Even after four  years, I’m still absolutely head over heels with it and the reason for this passion is because of this amazing community that I’m so thankful to be a part of. Thank YOU for making this blog such an important part of my life. I’m always so grateful for the constant support. I know that blogging, reading, commenting, chatting, and keeping up with my little web page takes up valuable time and I’m so thankful that you consider me and my opinions to be worth it. I’m hoping for many more years to come and I’m looking forward to so much more with all of these friends, old and new!

I also never expected books and blogging to lead me into a career path (well, I don’t know if it’ll ever turn into a career but you know… goals!) when I got the inspiration to start Novelly Yours (my candle shop). I wanted to make candles, just as something fun to do, and ended up relating them to books, opening and Etsy shop, and turning it into something I could share with friends and fellow book-lovers! It really wasn’t about making money or finding something to turn a profit — I was just having so much fun with what I was making and wanted to share it with other book people!! I’ve been so blown away by its success and I cannot thank everyone enough for the support throughout the opening and development of this shop! I’m still so in love with what I do and I cannot wait to keep coming up with new candle ideas!

The Book Addict’s Guide’s Birthday + Giveaway | 2016

Hooray! It’s my birthday!

Last year I did this long and detailed write-up about all of my favorite things that had happened from one birthday to the next but I feel like I just did that for my year-end wrap up and you guys have more important things to do than relive all of my old posts so I scrapped that idea! Instead, we are going to talk about one of the most important things about birthdays and maybe one of the most important things in the world: CAKE. It’s a CAKE-THEMED post today, just for fun!

I did a quick search and only had a few books with “cake” in the title (and really, this search and this post only made me so hungry) but I figured I’d share them with you and you can get hungry over them too!

Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2.5)    Strawberry Shortcake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #2)    100 Days of Cake

NIGHT OF CAKE AND PUPPETS from the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and it’s one of my favorite novellas of ALL. TIME. It’s about Mik and Zuzana and how they got together which is a simply delightful story and Zuzana is one of my favorite best friend characters of all time. This series was wonderful but this novella just added so much more to it and I got to spend time with two of my favorite supporting characters. Plus, cake.

STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE MURDER is the second book in the Hannah Swensen cozy mystery series. Each book comes with a recipe and I’ve actually made a few and they’re pretty delicious! I actually haven’t read any of these books in a long time because there’s a rather strange love triangle in them and the last I heard, she still hadn’t picked a guy. I didn’t mind the triangle aspect but I thought she was a bit too serious with both guys to really keep both of them on the hook and that actually bothered me enough to put this series on hold. I really had enjoyed them for a long time though and this was a series that really brought me back into reading again after my “dark days”.

100 DAYS OF CAKE is new to my TBR and it sounds very good! I haven’t started it yet but it comes out in May and it sounds like it’s going to be very down to earth and captivating while highlighting the importance of awareness for mental illness. I’m excited to read it because it sounds like it’s going to be realistic and still pack some humor in there. I’m hoping it becomes a new favorite. Plus, even though that cake on the cover is smashed, it still looks insanely delicious.

  • Celaena’s Chocolate Cake from THRONE OF GLASS: Celaena loves chocolate and maybe more importantly, she loves chocolate CAKE. I love this book and series so much that I had to make a candle for it. Also, anything that smells like cake… I’m gonna need it.
  • Michelle & Scarlet Benoit’s Lemon Cake from The Lunar Chronicles: This lemon cake sounds just divine! I can honestly picture and I wish I could really taste it! It’s featured in a few different books throughout the series and the moments where the characters eat the cake leave me with a happy feeling as well!
  • Dauntless Cake from DIVERGENT: Dauntless cake sounds absolutely delicous. Every time I hear about it, it makes my mouth water!
  • November Cakes from THE SCORPIO RACES: We actually made Maggie Stiefvater’s recipe for November Cakes and they were soooo good. I had dreamed about them for years and they smell and taste like heaven!
  • Harry’s first birthday cake (11th birthday) in HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCERER’S STONE: Awww how special is Harry’s birthday cake! I just adore the moment when Hagrid brings it to him. I’m not sure how good it would taste being that Hagrid made it… but the moment is touching all the same!

Of course there are some birthday giveaways!! I’ve got a few special prizes that I’ve been holding onto for such an occasion so check out the different prizes offered and enter the Rafflecopter forms below! Each giveaway is US ONLY (sorry, international! It’s just too expensive for me right now) and you must enter the Rafflecopter form for each prize you want to be eligible to win. I was immediately hooked on THE NOTEBOOK when I first saw the movie back in 2004 (WOW, that was over ten years ago already?!) and quickly went back to read the book. Shortly thereafter, I began picking up even more Nicholas Sparks books because I was so quickly captivated and wanted more!

If you haven’t seen the movie trailer yet, Nicholas Sparks’ latest book-to-movie THE CHOICE is hitting theaters on Tuesday, February 5th (and boy, does it look goooood). Cast: Benjamin Walker, Teresa Palmer, Maggie Grace, Alexandra Daddario, Tom Welling, Brett Rice, and Tom Wilkinson
Based on: The novel by Nicholas Sparks

When feisty medical student Gabby Holland moves in next door to perennial ladies’ man Travis Shaw, they embark on a surprising romantic journey neither imagined possible. Travis has always believed a serious relationship would cramp his easygoing lifestyle, while Gabby is preparing to settle down with her long-term boyfriend—until an irresistible attraction between the unlikely couple upends both of their well-planned lives. Spanning a decade and tracing the evolution of a love affair that is ultimately tested by life’s most defining events, this story features a memorable ensemble of friends and family in Sparks’s beloved North Carolina setting, culminating with the question that every couple must ask themselves:  how far would you go to keep the hope of love alive?

Quiz: Which YA Fantasy World Would You Live In?

fantasy world quiz

This all started with an offer from Penguin Teen to read the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes! (Thanks again, Penguin!) I hadn’t read it before and I’ve been meaning to for ages, honestly — ever since I really started getting into fantasy — so I immediately said yes! Along with reading FALLING KINGDOMS, we’re each supposed to share what fantasy world we would choose to live in or conquer and that question was a lot harder than I first thought it was!

I’ve become quite the fantasy nut. I started reading YA because that was where I was finding all of the dystopian novels (so thanks, dystopian!) but once I figured out that there were all different kinds of fantasy and not just Lord of the Rings (sorry, LotR fans… it wasn’t for me) quickly started gobbling up all of the young adult fantasy I could get my hands on. I discovered there were still some books I didn’t jive with but that’s honestly true of any genre so I didn’t become discouraged. Instead, I dove further into fantasy and fell into some of the most amazing worlds and stories that I’ve ever read!

Now that fantasy is one of my favorite genres, it was a bit difficult to pick my favorite. Writing a whole post about ONE fantasy world that I would live in? That’s way too hard! (Or I could just say “Harry Potter” and be done with it, since that’s always true…) The more I thought about it, the more I knew I couldn’t make this decision on my own… So I made a quiz! Naturally, I wanted to share the quiz with everyone else since this post most likely has you wondering which fantasy world you would choose to be a part of so fear not, fantasy friends! You can take this very quiz below!

WAIT!! Don’t skip to the quiz yet! (Promise me you didn’t. You didn’t, right? Or at least came back here? I’m not done yet!) So for this quiz, I took all of my favorite fantasy worlds as possible candidates, created some fun questions, and then yes, I took my own quiz. Honestly, it was impossible to cheat because some questions have more than one answer and some worlds apply to more than one possibility. It truly is a random quiz even though I knew what the answers were!

Okay, now’s the time to take the quiz and tell me what your answer is!!

So what answer did you get? I belong in… Ravka! That’s totally an awesome answer since The Grisha Trilogy is one of my all-time favorites and I think it would be awesome to be a Grisha! (Honestly. My friends and I have had discussions on which Grisha power we’d have so I’ve already put careful consideration into this. I’m a Squaller. I’m not quite sure why but that felt right. My husband would obviously be a Fabrikator (a Durast to be more specific) since that is his job in real life, just not with magic.) The life isn’t too scary either and let’s be honest… I’m no Alina. I’d probably try to stay away from the whole warring part. Good thing I’m not a Sun Summoner who’s attracted the attention of The Darkling!

Which YA fantasy world would you be in? Take the quiz above and find out!

Ravka is pretty awesome and I’m totally happy with that but which fantasy world would I want to be in? Okay, okay, so the Wizarding World of Harry Potter is totally one of my answers. I mean a SCHOOL of MAGIC? Plus all of those amazing shops, bars (can they really drink butterbeer that young? Does butterbeer get you drunk? Do we still not have a real answer for this???), and friends. How can you not?? When I put a lot of thought into it, I think aside from Harry Potter, my fantasy-loving heart really wants to be found in some adult fantasy books! I thought about including them in the quiz but I really didn’t want to open it up to adult books because there’s just so much I have left to explore in adult fantasy that I decided to keep this quiz strictly YA. I think if I had my choice, though, I’d probably be an Arcanist at the University in The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss or an Allomancer in Luthadell in Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson. I became obsessed with Allomancy, how it worked, and what sort of power I would have (still not sure yet) and I absolutely fell in love with the University, its students, and of course with Kvothe! I think those would truly be the worlds I would choose to be a part of. If you decided TL;DR, then you’re right — let’s agree on Harry Potter.

Don’t forget to take the quiz above and let me know your results! Or if your heart’s desire didn’t match your quiz results, which fantasy world would YOU choose to be a part of?

[bctt tweet=”Which YA fantasy world would YOU live in? Take the quiz at @bookaddictguide and find out! ” via=”no”]

And don’t forget to check out the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes! It is what inspired this whole post, afterall, and I think I may have to binge read this series! The first three books are out now with book four, FROZEN TIDES, come out soon in December!

Oh yes, there’s also a giveaway!!! If you want to win the first three books in the Falling Kingdoms series by Morgan Rhodes — SIGNED!! — then all you need to do is enter the Rafflecopter form below! The giveaway is open until 11/27/15. Three winners will be chosen by Penguin Teen at random. US entries only, please.    a Rafflecopter giveaway

The Book Addict’s Guide’s Three Year Blogoversary!

It’s my three year blogoversary!

Wow, three years of blogging have already gone by! In a way I feel like I just started and yet it feels weird to remember a time in the recent past that I wasn’t blogging. I say it at every major milestone but I am SO thankful that I found this hobby and such an amazing group of people to share my love of books with! I’ve met best friends, taken great trips, and fulfilled dreams that I never even knew I had! It has its ups and downs but reading and blogging has definitely enriched my life in so many ways that I can’t even begin to recap everything in one celebratory post! I just want to say thank you, thank you, thank you over and over again for welcoming me into this community and for every way that you as a community have helped me grow.

From being able to attend events like BEA, ALA, and all of the wonderful events that Anderson’s hosts to meeting my best friends through blogging, I couldn’t have asked for anything more from my blogging experience. I’ve been so fortunate to have so many amazing opportunities and they’ve just enriched this experience for me even more.

blog collage 2015

I’ve also been able to really improve myself in many ways too. I never expected to discover a few things about marketing and publicity from the industry and from marketing my own blog through social media. I’ve always made my own graphics and I used to be very, very amateur but I’m pretty pleased with how far I’ve come so far! I’ve also discovered how to do some very minor CSS for my blog to tweak it to my specifications. It’s just been so great to have this experience and see all the ways it’s influenced my life!

Okay, since it’s my THREE year blogoversary, I’m going to share my top THREE favorites in a couple categories. It’s always so interesting to see how things have changed over the past couple of years and what posts are still popular! (And again, it would be nothing without people to read it, so thank you for sticking with me and my blog!)

The Book Addict’s Guide Birthday Giveaway 2015!

Hooray! It’s my birthday!!! I guess I’m not THRILLED about getting older but hey, I’m always excited for my birthday! (I mean, 28 isn’t that old, right?) It’s the one day a year that’s allllll for me (really, how could you NOT like that?) but as always, I’m sharing the birthday festivities with all of my blogging friends!

Each year, I’m more and more grateful for everything that blogging has brought into my life. I had no idea that when I started this endeavor almost three years ago (my blogoversary is in April!) that I would make life-long friends, fangirl about authors, go to book conferences, and pick up a hobby that became more of a lifestyle. I’m SO happy that I started my blog and I can’t imagine how different things would be now if I had never started it!

Last year on my birthday I shared my top five things that happened that year, but there are just TOO many good things that happened this year so I’m choosing things in threes! Here are my top three…

  • BEA 2014: BEA is always one of my favorite events but this year was even more special for me! I got to room with both Alyssa and Amy, attend the YA Rooftop Party, AND attend a blogger party hosted by Macmillan — not to mention that we also snuck in a viewing of Maleficent, of course all the books, and I got to meet Cary Elwes (HE WINKED AT ME (although I think he winked at all the ladies, BUT STILL))! I’m not going to BEA this year (vacation time and money UGH but next year it’s in Chicago!) so I treasure it even more!
  • ALAMW15: I also attended ALA Midwinter in January this year! I had never been to ALA before (didn’t even realize that bloggers were allowed to go until last year) and I had SO much fun even though I was only able to attend on Saturday. I had to miss out on the Bloomsbury dinner because of the crazy snow storm that happened Saturday night/Sunday morning, but I’m so glad I got to grab most of my must-have titles, meet a few new friends (bloggers & publishers!), and spend the day doing awesomely bookish things! Since I’m not going to be able to go to BEA this year, I’m thinking ALAMW16 in Boston…….
  • Fierce Reads Tour Fall 2014 (Chicago): I ALWAYS love the Fierce Reads tours, but this one was extra special for me! Not only did Macmillan ask me to be the “featured blogger” of the event (meaning I got to have a special interview with the authors), but they also asked me to MODERATE THE PANEL omg. AND Marissa Meyer was one of the authors. I was so panicky but in a good way and it all turned out to be supremely awesome! Macmillan totally made my dreams come true (a dream I didn’t even know I had until that point) and the authors, as always, were delightful! Marissa Meyer was also SO GRACIOUS and personalized ALL of my Lunar Chronicles books (which as we know is a LOT).

  • Better Off Friends by Elizabeth Eulberg: I’m actually kind of surprised at what some of my top reviews were (in terms of how many views they got) but I’m delighted to see Better Off Friends as one of them! I really enjoyed this book. Elizabeth Eulberg’s characters are always just so much fun!
  • Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer: I’m actually not surprised by Cress and it makes me oh so happy! It’s one of my favorite reviews too! 😀
  • Altered (Crewel World #2) by Gennifer Albin: This is another one that surprises me but in a good way! I still need to read the last book in this series but I REALLY enjoyed Altered! It’s another series that I didn’t realize how popular it was!

  • The Book Addict’s “GUIDE” to Crossover Books: I love making infographics & reading guides and it seems that lots of people loved this “guide” to “crossover” books — I wanted to share some YA books that adult readers might enjoy and vice versa and this is still one of my favorite graphics to-date too!
  • If You Liked… If I Stay: I also created a new “series” of recommendation graphics and started off with a few books whose movie adaptations were out this year. I LOVE Gayle Forman and all of her books so I wanted to share some books that I loved that felt similar to me.
  • If You Liked… The Fault In Our Stars: This was another recommendation guide that I had a lot of fun making! It was actually the first one, right around when the movie came out too.

if_you_liked_if_i_stay             thefaultinourstars

  • Book and a Beverage: This is always one of my favorite features! I LOVE featuring a new blogger each week! I’m still catching up on the current schedule for now since I have people scheduled through May but I THINK I will open sign-ups again in April! 🙂
  • Have You Seen This: This was a feature that Andi and I came up with and the idea behind it was that we were both looking for some hard-to-find ARCs and special editions to add to or complete our collections of books. We wanted to have a spot for other people to add what books they were looking for and help a blogger out! I’m SO impressed by the success it’s had so far and I’m so thankful for everyone’s generosity to each other!
  • Pub Date: Pub Date is another one of my favorite features, started this year. I wanted to put my love of books and beer together, so each week, Estelle (Rather Be Reading), Andi (Andi’s ABCs), Maggie (Just A Couple More Pages) and I posted a book and beer-themed post. They don’t always get the most views or attention but I LOVE doing this feature with them and I really enjoy featuring these two favorites in my life together!

  • Book Blogger Organization Challenge: I really wanted to work on getting more organized this year but in a low-stress way. I feel like blog maintenance is really overwhelming for a lot of people so I created the Book Blogger Organization Challenge which focuses on something different each month to help people have a specific focus and not get bogged down on ALL THE THINGS. If you still want to join, you can hop in at any time! You don’t even have to officially sign up, but it’s there if it helps to keep you committed! 🙂
  • On the Same Page Secret Sister – Round 2: We started the second round of our Secret Sister project! We had SUCH a great response and hope that anyone who didn’t make it in this round because they missed sign-ups will join us for round three in July/August!
  • Fairest Blog Tour: I got to be on the blog tour for Fairest! I was just SO happy to share my love for The Lunar Chronicles all over again and tried to spread the word to even MORE people about how awesome this series is!

If you participated in the birthday giveaway last two years, GOOD NEWS! It’s the same again this year! Best of 2014 Book Giveaway!

best of 2014 book giveaway graphic

I can’t believe it’s December already! The year has truly flown by. But this also means I get to do one of my favorite things which is recapping and sharing with you my favorite reads of this year! Ginger at GReads! hosts her own Best of 2014 Book Giveaway and invited other bloggers to hop in on this event so when Ginger asked me if I wanted to be a part of it, I immediately said yes!

The past few years, I have been terrible at keeping track of what my favorite books were. I mean, Goodreads basically does the work for me and I had a favorites shelf and I could go back and see what I read, but as the years go by, I get more and more organized. This year I actually made a “Best of 2014” shelf so choosing which books I want to share with you today will be a snap!

Anna and the French Kiss – Stephanie Perkins
The Scorpio Races – Maggie Stiefvater
Walk Two Moons – Sharon Creech

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: This book gave me some SUPER FEELS all over again! If you’ve already read this & loved it, I HIGHLY recommend a re-read and if you haven’t, you probably need to win this giveaway so you can ask for it! 😀

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: This book is SO beautiful and the audio is simply fantastic too, if you’ve an audiobook person! I loved my first read of this but I think the second was even better. Brought so many feels back and I had forgotten exactly how it ended so that was a nice little surprise too!

Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech: I’m not really expecting someone to pick this if they win the giveaway but it has to be noted that this middle grade re-read was one of my best books of 2014. I read it as a kid and it’s STILL powerful to me today. I don’t know if reading it for the first time as an adult would hold the same weight for others since I did have all those childhood feelings creeping back but I still think it’s wonderful!

Dissonance (Dissonance #1) – Erica O’Rourke
Dangerous Girls – Abigail Haas
Open Road Summer – Emery Lord
The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard #1) – Scott Lynch

Dissonance (Dissonance #1) by Erica O’Rourke: This was SUCH a “me” book. Parallel universes, romance, music theory, set in Chicago… Totally Brittany. I absolutely loved it too! The science behind everything was fascinating and the romance was so sweet.

Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas: This mystery/thriller is totally realistic and totally swept me away. I read it in a single day and just devoured it. I was totally hooked and don’t fear the hype — it’s totally amazing!

Open Road Summer by Emery Lord: Soooo many feels for this book (Matt Finch!) and I even liked the country music aspect of this! Who would have though, right? The friendships, the romance. Gah. This book has it all!

The Lies of Locke Lamora (Gentleman Bastard #1) by Scott Lynch: If you’re looking to get into fantasy or adult fantasy, try this book! It’s a bit lengthy compared to most YA novels but it’s soooo much fun (and I hope you don’t mind cursing). It was a laugh a minute with brilliant characters and the best bromance I’ve ever read to boot.

Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky #3) – Veronica Rossi
Ruin and Rising (Grisha Trilogy #3) – Leigh Bardugo
Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) – Marissa Meyer
Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle #3) – Maggie Stiefvater
Mortal Heart (His Fair Assassin #3) – Robin LaFevers

Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky #3) by Veronica Rossi: I think the second book may have been my favorite of this trilogy but ItSB was so wonderful and exactly how a series/trilogy should end. I thought Veronica Rossi totally knocked it out of the park and it made me SO happy to have such a wonderful ending to the trilogy because I want to keep on recommending it!

Ruin and Rising (The Grisha Trilogy #3) by Leigh Bardugo: I just love this series to pieces. If you’re looking for a great fantasy series and you haven’t read this yet, START IT. Leigh Bardugo penned a fantastic trilogy here and it’s one I will recommend and re-read many times, I’m sure!

Cress (The Lunar Chronicles #3) by Marissa Meyer: I actually read this back in 2013 but it was released in 2014 so it counts! If you know me but at all, you know that this is one of my favorite series. I still remember ALL THE FEELINGS when I read this and it was honestly so cinematic! Just a masterpiece.

Blue Lily, Lily Blue (The Raven Cycle #3) by Maggie Stiefvater: Oh. My. Gansey. This book just killed me. How am I supposed to wait for book four again!?!? I love this series and this was by far the best one so far. OH, THE FEELS.

Mortal Heart (His Fair Assassin #3) by Robin LaFevers: I just LOVED these companion novels but omg, MORTAL HEART. It was so amazing! I’ve always been dying to find out Annith’s story and I really love how this whole series comes together!

The Assassin’s Blade (Throne of Glass # 0.1 – 0.5) – Sarah J. Maas
Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass #1) – Sarah J. Maas
Crown of Midnight (Throne of Glass #2) – Sarah J. Maas
Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) – Sarah J. Maas
Mistborn: The Final Empire (Mistborn #1) – Brandon Sanderson
The Well of Ascension (Mistborn #2) – Brandon Sanderson

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas: I binge read this series in the summer/fall and gahhhh. I fell in love. HEIR OF FIRE, OMG. These books really got me even deeper into fantasy and I am already dying for book four. Eeeek.

Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson: I also binge read this series and WOW. Another adult fantasy collection that I just fell head over heels for. I almost wish I hadn’t binge read it…? Because now I want so much more of it haha. I will have to stick to the spin-offs and other Sanderson books afterwards!
