The Deja Vu Review [2]

The Deja Vu Review is a new Sunday feature with mini-reviews from books I’ve read before I began my blog at The Book Addict’s Guide! Since I’ve been reading my whole life and only started my blog back in April of 2012, this is my opportunity to revisit some older books and share some mini-reviews of those that didn’t quite make it into the blog spotlight after the initial read.

This Week’s Topic: A Book You Didn’t Enjoy as Much as You Thought You Would

Something BorrowedSomething Borrowed by Emily Giffin
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Read: April 2011
Comments: I actually didn’t like this book as much as I hoped. It was just hard for me to root for someone who was helping someone cheat, even though the relationship was not one that was supposed to be. I did like the character of Rachel and she is very relatable, but Darcy seemed like a caricature of a person. It could just be that I don’t know many people like that though, so it was hard to understand her. Call me old-fashioned, but I wanted everyone to end up separate in the end because I don’t think cheating parties should be rewarded. I wanted to try the next book in the series, Something Blue, just to see if I liked it better, but I ended up giving up on the series and swapped the book instead!
What About the Movie?: I felt pretty much the same way about the movie. Although, I did like the John Krasinski character and they definitely beefed up his character’s part in the movie. I just like him so it made the movie a little better, but I actually found Kate Hudson really annoying as Darcy when I usually like her. Oh well!

The Lovely BonesThe Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Read: March 2011
Comments: Actually, looking back, I almost want to give it 3 stars instead of 4. I definitely liked the book better than the movie (I really didn’t like the visual representation of Susie’s in-between world – But in a weird way enjoyed a creepy Stanley Tucci (well, I just like Stanley Tucci)), but I felt like the book was really too long. I started to get bored and rush through towards the end. Although a really great story, I think it kind of lost me towards the end.

I didn’t realize Something Borrowed was a book. Now I am going to have to read it since I saw the movie. The movie was ok, but wasn’t exactly what I thought it would be. As for The Lovely Bones, it was an ok book as well. And the book was better than the movie. The thing that made that book standable for me was the ending. If you weren’t super impressed with it, please don’t waste your time and her book The Almost Moon. Love the new look of the blog!!

I agree, I liked the Lovely Bones better as a book than a movie. Still had hoped for more from it though! I think it was too long, really. I got bored reading towards the end and truthfully, I don’t even remember how it ended! yikes…
      Thanks for your input! 🙂

Oh my gosh, this is such a good idea! I will totally participate this week, and hopefully some more will participate. My blog is new too, and, like you said, there are lots of amazing books I’ve read, that I have not reviewed. That’s great that you are starting your own features!

Oooooh thank you thank you!!! Not many people have done it so far so its more of an attempt at a feature right now but hopefully as the weeks go by more people will hop on! 🙂 I appreciate the participation! I’m exited to see what you review.
